KKLO (1410kHz) is acommercialAMradio stationlicensed toLeavenworth, Kansas, and serving theKansas City metropolitan area. It broadcasts aSpanish-languageChristian radioformat and is owned by Radio Vida Kansas, Inc.[1] The station isnon-commercial and seeks donations on the air and on its website.
By day, KKLO broadcasts at 5,000watts. But to protect other stations on1410 AM from interference, at night it reduces power to 500 watts. It uses adirectional antenna with a three-tower array. Thetransmitter is on the corner of Muncie Road at Hughes Road in Leavenworth.[2] Programming is also heard on 99-wattFM translatorK224FF at 92.7MHz inLenexa, Kansas.[3]
The stationsigned on the air in 1948; 77 years ago (1948). The originalcall sign was KCLO and it was adaytimer, required to go off the air at night. It was owned by the Leavenworth Broadcasting Company, with studios on 418 1/2 Cherokee Street.[4]
In 1968, it added an FMsister station, 98.1 KKLO-FM (todayKMBZ-FM). In the 1980s, KKLO 1410 received authorization to broadcast around the clock.
