K. P. Kumaran is an Indianfilm maker who works in theMalayalam cinema. He co-authored the script ofSwayamvaram directed byAdoor Gopalakrishnan. Kumaran's first directorial venture wasAthithi.[1] His major films includeRugmini (winner of the 1989National Film Award forBest Feature Film in Malayalam),Thenthulli,Laxmivijayam andThottam. His latest film,Akasha Gopuram, is based onHenrik Ibsen's playThe Master Builder.[2]
Kumaran's first directorial venture wasRock (short film), which won an international award. His first feature film wasAdhithi.[3] He won theJ. C. Daniel Award for 2021.[4][5]
In 2022, for his overall contribution to the Malayalam film industry, he receivedJ. C. Daniel Award, the highest honour in Malayalam cinema.[3] In 2023, he received theChalachitra Ratnam Award instituted by theKerala Film Critics Association for his overall contribution to the Malayalam film industry.[6]
