Kāraerae was agreat migratorywaka (canoe) used by earlyPolynesian settlers in New Zealand according toMāori tradition, in which it is said that after Tamatea-arikinui wrecked theTākitimu atTe Waewae Bay inSouthland, he built theKāraerae and sailed back to theNorth Island.[1]
In oneMoriori tradition,Te Kāraerae was said to be the first canoe to land atRēkohu. It was captained by Kahukoha, Rongomaiwhenua, Te Ao, and Puwaitaha – all ofNgāti Kopeka, a branch ofWaitaha.[2]
