Jurriën David Norman Timber (Dutch pronunciation:[ˈjʏri(j)ɛnˈtɪmbər];[4] born 17 June 2001) is a Dutch professionalfootballer who plays as adefender forPremier League clubArsenal and theNetherlands national team. Considered one of the best right-backs in the world, he is known for his versatility, composure, and ball control.[5][6][7][8]
Timber joinedAjax's youth academy in 2014, fromFeyenoord, together with his twin brotherQuinten. He made his first-team debut for Ajax in March 2020, and won twoEredivisie titles and oneKNVB Cup. He signed for Arsenal in July 2023, for an initial transfer fee of £34 million from Eredivisie club Ajax.
Timber made 29 appearances for the Netherlands at youth international level. He was a member of theunder-17 team that won the2018 UEFA European Under-17 Championship. He made his senior international debut in June 2021.
Timber started playing forUtrecht-based club DVSU at the age of four, before joiningFeyenoord's youth system when he was six.[9] In 2014, he joinedAjax, where he signed his first professional contract in 2018.[9]
Timber made his senior debut for Ajax in a 3–1 win overSC Heerenveen on 7 March 2020.[citation needed]
He scored his first career goal for Ajax againstEmmen on 2 May 2021.[10] It was the opening goal in an eventual 4–0 win. That result confirmed Ajax asEredivisie champions for a record 35th time.[10]
On 14 July 2023, it was announced that Timber had joinedArsenal fromAjax on a long-term contract and would wear the number 12, previously worn byWilliam Saliba.[11] Arsenal paid Ajax an initial transfer fee of £34 million, with the deal containing add-ons that could raise the fee to £38.5 million.[12] On 6 August, he made his competitive debut for the club againstManchester City in theCommunity Shield, which Arsenal won 4–1 on penalties.[13] Timber made hisPremier League debut in a 2–1 home win overNottingham Forest on 12 August. He limped off in the 50th minute with an injury. It was later confirmed that he had suffered anACL injury on his right knee which would require surgery and keep him out of the game for a "period of time".[14] In February 2024, he was included in the club's squad for theChampions League knockout phase.[15]
On 22 April 2024, Timber made his comeback inArsenal Under-21s'Premier League 2 game againstBlackburn Rovers, playing the first half and scoring the opening goal in a 2–2 draw atEwood Park.[16][17] He made his first-team comeback on 19 May, coming on as a 69th minute substitute forBen White in Arsenal's final-day win againstEverton. Timber said he "felt so good after so many months of hard work" and "it's just nice for me to go into the summer with some minutes."[18]
On 4 December 2024, Timber scored his first goal for Arsenal from a header in a 2–0 victory againstManchester United at theEmirates Stadium.[19] On 4 March 2025, he netted his first Champions League goal in a 7–1 away win overPSV Eindhoven during theRound of 16.[20] Jurrien Timber received widespread praise for his defensive performance in Arsenal’s Champions League quarter-final win overReal Madrid, with fans highlighting his ability to neutralizeVinícius Júnior.[21][22]
Having played 48 matches across all competitions, including 30 in the Premier League and 13 in the Champions League, Jurrien Timber cemented his place as Arsenal’s starting right-back.[23][24]
Timber played youth international football for the Netherlands at under-15,[25]under-16,[26]under-17,[27]under-19[28] andunder-21 levels.[29] He was selected for the seniorNetherlands squad forUEFA Euro 2020. He made his debut for the team on 2 June 2021, as a starter in a friendly againstScotland.[30]
Timber was included in the final selection of the Netherlands team for the2022 FIFA World Cup by managerLouis van Gaal in November 2022.[31] After missing the openinggroup stage win againstSenegal,[32] he played 90 minutes in the 1–1 draw againstEcuador[33] and the 2–0 win againstQatar.[34] He again played 90 minutes in theround of 16 win against theUnited States[35] as well as the entirety of thequarter-final match againstArgentina, which the Netherlands eventually lost onpenalties and so were subsequently eliminated from the tournament.[36]
After missingUEFA Euro 2024 due to injury, Timber was recalled to the Netherlands' squad for their opening matches of the2024–25 UEFA Nations League in September 2024.[37] In the match againstBosnia & Herzegovina on 8 September, he appeared as a substitute in the 83rd minute, lining up alongside his brother Quinten for the first time in senior football. This made the Timber brothers the third pair of twins to represent the Netherlands together afterRené andWilly van de Kerkhof andFrank andRonald de Boer.[38]
Born in the Netherlands, Timber and his twin brotherQuinten, who is also a footballer, are ofCuraçaoan descent. Both their mother Marilyn and their father hail fromCuraçao, part of theABC Islands in theDutch Caribbean. Due to past situations, the family took on their maternal name Timber instead of taking the last name of their father Maduro.[39] The twins also have three older brothers Shamier, Chris, andDylan, the latter of whom is also a footballer who representsCuraçao on an international level.[40]
