As a part of the defunctEuropa Jupiter System Mission – Laplace (EJSM-Laplace), theJupiter Europa Orbiter (JEO) was a proposedorbiterprobe slated for lift-off in 2020 and planned for detailed studies ofJupiter's moonsEuropa andIo as well as theJovian magnetosphere.[1] Its main goal would have been to look for evidence of a possible subsurface ocean.[2]

In June 2015, a more economical mission, theEuropa Multiple-Flyby Mission, renamed intoEuropa Clipper, was approved byNASA and entered the formulation stage.[3]
