Julia Garner (born February 1, 1994) is an American actress. She gained recognition for playingRuth Langmore in theNetflix crime drama seriesOzark (2017–2022), for which she received critical acclaim and won threePrimetime Emmy Awards forOutstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series and aGolden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress .
Garner also had roles in theFX drama seriesThe Americans (2015–2018), the Netflix miniseriesManiac (2018), and theBravo true crime seriesDirty John (2018–2019). In 2022, she portrayedAnna Sorokin in the Netflix miniseriesInventing Anna , for which she received nominations for aPrimetime Emmy Award and aGolden Globe Award for Best Actress .
In film, Garner has appeared inMartha Marcy May Marlene (2011),The Perks of Being a Wallflower (2012),Sin City: A Dame to Kill For (2014), andThe Fantastic Four: First Steps (2025). Early life and education [ edit ] Julia Garner was born on February 1, 1994[ 1] in theRiverdale neighborhood ofthe Bronx , New York.[ 2] Her mother, Tamar Gingold, is a therapist who worked as an actress and comedian inIsrael . Her father, Thomas Garner, is a painter and an art teacher originally fromShaker Heights, Ohio .[ 3] Garner'smother is Jewish .[ 4] [ 5] Her older sister is artist Anna Garner.[ 6] [ 7] She understands Hebrew because her mother speaks it, but is not fluent herself.[ 8] [ 9]
Garner attendedEagle Hill School inGreenwich, Connecticut .[ 10] She began taking acting lessons at age 15 to overcome her shyness.[ 11] During the2023 SAG-AFTRA strike , Garner studied clown underPhilippe Gaulier atÉcole Philippe Gaulier in France.[ 12] [ 13]
2011–2018: Early roles and breakthrough[ edit ] Paul Weitz ,Lily Tomlin , Julia Garner, and Mo Aboul-Zelof at the2015 Sundance Film Festival Garner made her film debut at age 17 inSean Durkin 'sMartha Marcy May Marlene , playing the role of Sarah.
In 2012, directorDavid Chase invited her to play a small role he had written specifically for her in his filmNot Fade Away .[ 3] Also in the same year, she landed her first leading role in the filmElectrick Children .[ 3] In 2013, she starred alongsideAshley Bell in the horror filmThe Last Exorcism Part II , and played the lead in theAmerican remake of the Mexican horror filmWe Are What We Are .
Garner co-starred inSin City: A Dame to Kill For (2014) as new character Marcie, a young stripper who crosses paths with another new character, Johnny (Joseph Gordon-Levitt ).[ 14] This marked the first time she acted against agreen screen .[ 3]
In 2015, Garner starred in thePaul Weitz -directed comedy filmGrandma alongsideLily Tomlin . Garner played a teenaged student eliciting the help of her lesbian poet grandmother (Tomlin) for an abortion. In 2016, she appeared in an episode ofLena Dunham 'sHBO comedy seriesGirls titled "The Panic in Central Park ".
Garner continued acting in television and was cast in a recurring role in the third season of theFX period spy-thriller seriesThe Americans .[ 15] She continued the role throughseason six . She was to have made her off-Broadway debut in Noah Haidle's playSmokefall atMCC Theater in 2016, but had to drop out during rehearsals because of scheduling conflicts.[ 16]
Beginning in 2017, Garner starred asRuth Langmore in theNetflix crime drama seriesOzark , oppositeJason Bateman andLaura Linney .[ 17] The role gained her critical acclaim and threePrimetime Emmy Awards forOutstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series .[ 18] [ 19]
In 2018, Garner appeared in the Paramount Network miniseriesWaco as Michelle, the sister ofMelissa Benoist 's character; and in the Netflix miniseriesManiac as Ellie, the sister ofEmma Stone 's character.[ 20] Garner also made regular appearances in theBravo true crime anthology seriesDirty John (2018–19). She starred as Terra Newell, the daughter ofConnie Britton 's character.[ 21]
2019–present: Crime films and horror roles[ edit ] Garner at the70th Berlin International Film Festival in 2020 In 2019, Garner appeared in theAmazon anthology series,Modern Love . She was featured in two episodes of its first season as a woman who has a crush on a much older man, played byShea Whigham . In the same year, she starred in the independent drama filmThe Assistant as aproduction assistant in a toxic work environment. The film which was directed byKitty Green , addressed the current culture surrounding theMeToo movement . The film premiered at the 2019Telluride Film Festival to critical acclaim. Garner received acclaim for her performance as well as anIndependent Spirit Award nomination.[ 22]
Garner also co-stars in the Netflix miniseriesInventing Anna , playing the title role of fraudsterAnna Delvey . The series was created and produced byShonda Rhimes , based on theNew York article "How Anna Delvey Tricked New York's Party People" written byJessica Pressler .[ 23] It was released onNetflix on February 11, 2022.[ 24] [ 25]
In 2022, Garner was cast in thriller filmApartment 7A which serves as aprequel to 1968'sRosemary's Baby , directed byNatalie Erika James .[ 26] Her company Alma Margo also signed a first look deal withTomorrow Studios .[ 27] In June of the same year, Garner was chosen byMadonna to play her in her self-produced biopicWho's That Girl ; the project was put on hold whilethe singer was touring ,[ 28] and work on it had reportedly restarted in 2024.[ 29] [ 30]

In April 2024, Garner was cast asShalla-Bal / Silver Surfer in theMarvel Cinematic Universe film,The Fantastic Four: First Steps .[ 32] That same year, she was cast inLeigh Whannell 'sWolf Man , along withZach Cregger 's horror film,Weapons . All three films premiered in 2025.
Garner married singerMark Foster , lead vocalist ofFoster the People , in a December 2019 ceremony atNew York City Hall ,[ 33] [ 34] eight months after they got engaged.[ 35]
Following theOctober 7 attacks in 2023, Garner signed an open letter published byCreative Community for Peace praising PresidentJoe Biden for "unshakable moral conviction, leadership, and support for the Jewish people", as well as calling for the release of all hostages kidnapped during the attacks.[ 36]
