Judicial officer in armed forces for military justice

Judge-advocates are militarylawyers serving in different capacities in themilitary justice systems of different jurisdictions.

Australia

TheAustralian Army Legal Corps (AALC)[1] consists ofRegular andReserve commissioned officers that provide specific legal advice tocommanders and general legal advice to allranks. They must be admitted to practice as Australian Legal Practitioners.

Canada

TheOffice of the Judge Advocate General for theCanadian Forces provides legal advice to commanders atbases andwings, provides lawyers who defend accused persons atcourts martial, teaches courses to other CF members or advises acommanding officer in an operationaltheatre to uphold theethical andlegal principles established by both the Canadian Forces and theGovernment of Canada. The current JAG of the Canadian Forces is Rear-Admiral G. Bernatchez.

Denmark

TheMilitary Prosecution Service orJudge Advocate General's Corps (Danish:Forsvarets Auditørkorps, shortFAUK) is a Danish independent militaryprosecutor and the legal branch of theDanish military. It is a Level.I command[clarification needed] and is under theMinistry of Defence. The Judge Advocate General (Danish:Generalauditør) heads the Defence Judge Advocate Corps. It is located atKastellet inCopenhagen.

United Kingdom

The judges who preside over all hearings of the Service courts are known while they are sitting asjudge advocates. In the same way as other judges, they are appointed by theLord Chancellor following a process conducted by theJudicial Appointments Commission (JAC) or, in the case of the Judge Advocate General, appointed bythe King. They are always legally qualified civilianssolicitors,barristers, oradvocates – of at least seven years' standing. AHigh Court Judge may also sit as a judge advocate if requested to do so by theJudge Advocate General in a particularly serious case.[2] Members of theArmy Legal Services Branch or theRAF Legal Branch are not called judge-advocates.
