Juan Carlos Arguedas Ávila (born 3 May 1970) is a retiredCosta Ricanfootballer.

Club career

Arguedas used to play forAD Carmelita, but was also part of the three "big teams" ofCosta Rica'sfootball,Deportivo Saprissa,Herediano[1] andAlajuelense. He made his professional debut for the latter on 18 March 1988 againstRamonense.[2] He was Costa Rica's league top goalscorer twice, in 1994/95 and 1999/2000 with 28 and 23 goals respectively and scored a total of 125 goals in Costa Rica'sPremier Division .[3]

Spells abroad

He also had a spell withTecos in thePrimera División de México,[4] in theGuatemalan top division withCobán Imperial[5] andAurora[6] and with Colombian sideAtlético Bucaramanga.[7] He also had a short stint withVirginia Beach Mariners.[8]

He announced his retirement in May 2004.[9]

International career

He played for Costa Rica at the1989 FIFA World Youth Championship inSaudi Arabia.[10]

He made his senior debut forCosta Rica in a May 1991friendly match againstUruguay and earned a total of 24 caps, scoring 4 goals. He has represented his country in 4FIFA World Cup qualification matches[10] and played at the1993 UNCAF Nations Cup[11] as well as the1991 CONCACAF Gold Cup.[12]

He played his final international game in September 2000 againstBarbados.

Managerial career

After retiring as a player, Arguedas started managing Carmelita. Later he was appointed manager ofSan Carlos[13] andRamonense.[14]
