Juan Bernat Velasco (Spanish pronunciation:[ˈxwambeɾˈnat];[A] born 1 March 1993) is a Spanish professionalfootballer who plays as aleft-back forLa Liga clubGetafe.
He began his career atValencia, featuring in threeLa Liga campaigns for the club. He moved toBayern Munich in 2014, winning theBundesliga every season during his four-year spell while appearing in 115 competitive matches. In August 2018, he signed withParis Saint-Germain, playing in the2020 UEFA Champions League final and losing to his former side Bayern Munich. He suffered ananterior cruciate ligament injury in September 2020 that would keep him out for over a year. After returning to play in 2021, he spent time on loan atBenfica andVillarreal before joining Getafe in 2025.
A European champion with theunder-19 team in2012, Bernat made his senior debut forSpain in 2014.
Born inCullera,Valencian Community, Bernat was a product ofValencia's youth system.[4] He made his senior debut at only 17, appearing withthe reserves in theTercera División and helping them toreturn toSegunda División B. He was brought to the main squad for the 2011 pre-season, scoring in a 3–0 away win againstSporting CP, and earned a professional contract until 2015 shortly after.[5]
Bernat made his debut with theChe's first team in a 4–3La Liga home victory overRacing de Santander on 27 August 2011; he started the game and wasreplaced athalf-time, with the score at 2–1 for the visitors.[6] His second league appearance occurred on 22 January 2012 in a 1–1 draw atOsasuna, substitutingJonas in the 57th minute.[7] He continued featuring regularly for the B's in the third tier.
Bernat scored his first official goal for Valencia on 28 November 2012, netting his team's last in a 3–1 home defeat ofLlagostera forthat season'sCopa del Rey (5–1 on aggregate).[8] He scored his first in the league roughly one year later, coming from the bench for the 1–1 equaliser atElche (eventual 2–1 loss).[9]
From 2013 onwards, Bernat started being utilised as aleft-back.[10]
On 7 July 2014, Bernat signed forBayern Munich on a five-year contract.[11][12] He made his debut on 13 August, playing the entirety of the2–0 defeat toBorussia Dortmund in theDFL-Supercup,[13] and played his firstBundesliga match nine days later, a 2–1 home win againstVfL Wolfsburg.[14]
Shortly after being placed first in Outside of the Boot'sTalent Radar Top 20 Young Players of 2014,[15] Bernat scored his first competitive goal for theBavarians, but in a 4–1 loss at Wolfsburg on 30 January 2015.[16]
On 31 August 2018, Bernat joinedParis Saint-Germain on a three-year deal,[17] replacingYuri Berchiche who had left forAthletic Bilbao.[18] HisLigue 1 debut occurred on 14 September in a home fixture againstSaint-Étienne, and played the full 90 minutes in the 4–0 win.[19] He scored his first competitive goal for the team on 6 November, in a 1–1 away draw withNapoli in thegroup stage of theUEFA Champions League;[20] in the following Champions League seasons, he would also score againstLiverpool,Manchester United, Borussia Dortmund andRB Leipzig.[21]
On 16 September 2020, Bernat suffered ananterior cruciate ligament injury in a match againstMetz; it was reported he would miss six months of action.[22] On 16 March 2021, he signed an extension to keep him at the club until 2025.[23] His return to play would come later than initially planned, on 15 October in a 2–1 league victory overAngers at theParc des Princes.[24]
On 1 September 2023, Bernat joinedBenfica on aseason-long loan.[25] He made his debut on 3 October, starting in a 1–0 defeat atInter Milan in theChampions League group stage.[26] His maidenPrimeira Liga appearance took place four days later, when he came off the bench forDavid Jurásek in the 77th minute of a 1–0 away win overEstoril;[27] he totalled only seven appearances during his spell, being often injured.[28][29]
Bernat was loaned toVillarreal in the Spanish top division on 30 August 2024.[30] On 22 January 2025, his transfer was made permanent after PSG terminated his contract.[31]
On 3 February 2025, Bernat was released.[32]
Shortly after leaving Villarreal, Bernat signed forGetafe on a deal until the end ofthe season.[33][34]
Bernat moved through theSpanish international youth setup, representing all sides betweenthe under-16s andthe under-21s. He made his debut with the former in 2009, and with theunder-17 side he reached the final at the2010 UEFA European Championship, playing alongside Valencia teammatePaco Alcácer.[35]
In2012, Bernat was part of the squad that won theUnder-19 Championship inEstonia. On 3 October 2014, he was called up byfull side managerVicente del Bosque forUEFA Euro 2016 qualifying matches againstSlovakia andLuxembourg:[36] he made his debut on the 12th against the latter, replacingAndrés Iniesta for the final 20 minutes and scoring the last goal of a 4–0 win.[37]
