Josip Višnjić (Cyrillic: Јосип Вишњић; born 17 November 1966) is a Serbian retiredfootballer who played as adefensive midfielder, and acoach. His first name has also been spelled asJosif.[1]
After starting out atRadnički Niš, he went on to spend the vast majority of his career in Spain, as both a player and manager. InLa Liga, he representedRayo Vallecano andHércules.[2]
In his country,Belgrade-born Višnjić played forFK Radnički Niš andFK Partizan. At nearly 25 he moved abroad, going on to spend the remaining years of his career inSpain, with three clubs: he started out withCP Mérida in thesecond division, then achieved both onepromotion and relegation fromLa Liga withMadrid'sRayo Vallecano.[3]
In 1995, Višnjić signed withHércules CF inAlicante, playing 30 matches inhis first season which ended in top flight promotion, followed byimmediate relegation. After the club's demotion into thethird level in1999, the 32-year-old retired one year later, having appeared in 88 games in the Spanish top division (238 with bothmajor levels accounted for).
Višnjić started coaching one year after retiring, starting withthe reserves of his last club (he also briefly managed the first team) and working mainly in Spain, never in higher than division three. In the2004–05 campaign, he worked with former Hércules teammateManolo Alfaro atRSD Alcalá. Višnjić returned to manage Hércules in 2018.[4]
