Joshua Anthony Charlton Henry[1] (born September 2, 1984) is a Canadian-American actor and singer ofstage andscreen, known for his performances inBroadwaymusicals.
He is best known for starring as Billy Bigelow in the third Broadwayrevival ofCarousel and asHaywood Patterson inKander and Ebb'sThe Scottsboro Boys, both of which earned himTony Award nominations.[2] He has also received a Tony Award nomination for his role of Flick inViolet. In September 2025, he began starring as Coalhouse Walker Jr. in a Broadway revival ofRagtime, a role he previously playedOff-Broadway atNew York City Center.[3]
Henry starred in the lead role ofAaron Burr in the first United States national tour ofHamilton, previously playing the role in theChicago production in 2016.[4] His other notable performances include Dr. Jim Pomatter in the Broadway restaging ofWaitress,[5]Rapunzel’s Prince in the second Broadway revival ofInto the Woods,[6] andGaston inBeauty and the Beast: A 30th Celebration. He also portrayed Jake in the 2011 Broadway production ofPorgy and Bess andNoble Sissle in the original Broadway cast ofShuffle Along .[7]
Henry was born inWinnipeg,Manitoba, Canada[8] to Zadoc Henry (a teacher atCalvary Christian Academy), and raised inMiami.[9] He originally wanted to be an accountant, like his mother. However, he was cast as Harold Hill in his high school (Florida Bible Christian School) production ofThe Music Man and with the experience he changed his mind.
Henry studied theatre at theUniversity of Miami, where he graduated in 2006.[9]
Henry made his acting debut when he co-starred asJudas/John the Baptist in thePaper Mill Playhouse (Milburn, New Jersey) production ofGodspell in 2006. He was set to star in a 2008Broadway transfer oppositeGavin Creel as Jesus andDiana DeGarmo, but the project was cancelled.[10][11]
In 2007, Henry appeared in the ensemble of theOff-BroadwaymusicalIn the Heights, re-joining the cast for the show's Broadway production.[12] ForIn the Heights, the entire cast won aDrama Desk Award, and Henry and the ensemble won an ACCA Award for Outstanding Broadway Chorus fromActors' Equity Association.[13]
Henry starred inSerenade, which played off-Broadway from December 9, 2007, to December 15, 2007.[14] In June 2009, Henry contributed original music to the off-Broadway musicalShafrika, The White Girl at theVineyard Theatre.[15]
In 2009, he also starred inThe Wiz asThe Tin Man atNew York City Center as a part of theirEncores! series.
From March 24, 2010 to July 20, 2010 he played "Favorite Son" in the original Broadway cast of theGreen DaymusicalAmerican Idiot.[16][17] From March 15, 2011 until the show's closing on April 24, 2011 he returned to the role of "Favorite Son" inAmerican Idiot.[18][19]
Henry then joined the Broadway cast ofThe Scottsboro Boys, directed and choreographed bySusan Stroman with a score byJohn Kander andFred Ebb.[20] He portrayedHaywood Patterson, for which he achieved critical praise.[21]The Star Tribune wrote of his performance, "Joshua Henry ... ignites the role of Haywood Patterson as the lightning rod for our identification with the men."[22] Charles Isherwood inThe New York Times asserted that Henry "gives a performance of keen intensity as Haywood Patterson, an illiterate young man who becomes the focus of our sympathy as he steadfastly refuses to sign his name to a lie in order to obtain parole. Mr. Henry performs Haywood’s ballad of hopeless yearning, "Go Back Home," with a powerful simplicity that slashes through the evening's artifice."[23] Despite these positive reviews,The Scottsboro Boys closed within a month.[24] For his performance, Henry was nominated for the2011 Tony Award forBest Actor in a Musical, but lost toNorbert Leo Butz inCatch Me If You Can.[25][26]
On January 22, he was among the performers in theBroadway Memories concert performance in New York, in which he performed selections fromThe Scottsboro Boys.[27] On March 2, 2011, he performed withThe Scottsboro Boys' original Broadway cast inStro!, a gala celebration honoring Susan Stroman.[28]
Henry attended and performed at a MCC Miscast Gala in New York, held on March 15, 2011. The performance showcases "Broadway's hottest stars performing songs from roles in which they would never be cast."[29] On April 10, 2011, he returned to theUniversity of Miami to perform in theirBroadway Unplugged concert.[30] In addition, Henry and the cast ofThe Scottsboro Boys performed in the May 16, 2011, performance ofBroadway Sensation in New York City.[31]
Henry performed the role of Jake in theAmerican Repertory Theater's production ofPorgy and Bess, which began previews August 17, 2011, at the Loeb Drama Center inCambridge, Massachusetts. It officially opened on August 31 and ran through September 30, 2011. It transferred to theRichard Rodgers Theatre on Broadway where it played from January 12 until September 23, 2012.[32]
In May and June 2013, he reprised his Tony nominated role inThe Scottsboro Boys at theAhmanson Theatre.[33]
Henry performed the role of Flick in theRoundabout Theatre production ofViolet which began in April, 2014. On April 29, 2014, he was nominated for a Tony in the category of Best Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical.
Henry performed in a one-night concert performance ofParade at theLincoln Center. He starred as Jim Conley oppositeJeremy Jordan as Leo Frank,Ramin Karimloo as Tom Watson, andLaura Benanti as Lucille Frank.[34]
He appeared in the role ofNoble Sissle in the 2016 production ofShuffle Along, or, the Making of the Musical Sensation of 1921 and All That Followed at theMusic Box Theatre on Broadway.
Henry starred as Jamie alongsideCynthia Erivo in a one-night benefit concert performance ofJason Robert Brown'sThe Last Five Years on September 12, 2016. Proceeds from the performance went to theBrady Center, a national gun violence organization.[35]
Henry originated the roles ofHercules Mulligan,James Madison, andKing George III in the 2013Vassar College workshop ofLin-Manuel Miranda’sHamilton.[36] In 2016 and 2017, Henry starred in the lead role ofAaron Burr in the Chicago production ofHamilton: An American Musical at theCIBC Theatre. He reprised the role in the firstUnited States national tour in San Francisco and Los Angeles.[4] On November 18, 2020, it was announced Henry would reprise his role of Burr in a special performance with the cast ofHamilton for theMacy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.[37]
In 2018, Henry starred and gained wide-spread acclaim as Billy Bigelow alongsideJessie Mueller in the third Broadway revival ofRodgers and Hammerstein'sCarousel, for which he received a Tony Award nomination. Performances began on February 28 before officially opening on April 12. The show closed on September 16 after 181 performances.[38]
In 2021, Henry became the first African-American actor to play Dr. Pomatter inWaitress.[39] He joined the Broadway cast on November 29 and stayed until it closed due to COVID-19 cases in the cast on December 20. He starred alongsideCiara Renèe as Jenna in the restaged production. He received a Broadway.com Audience Choice Award for his portrayal.[40]
In May 2022, it was announced Henry would star asRapunzel’s Prince in the second Broadway revival ofInto the Woods that would open in June of that year.[41] He left the production on October 9 for the filming ofBeauty and the Beast: A 30th Celebration and was replaced byAndy Karl.[42] Henry returned to the production after Karl’s extended run[43] ended December 2. Henry would stay with the production until its final performance on January 8, 2023. During the run he would star oppositeGavin Creel,Cheyenne Jackson, Karl,Sara Bareilles,Brian d'Arcy James,Patina Miller,Stephanie J. Block,Montego Glover,Joaquina Kalukango,Sebastian Arcelus,Phillipa Soo, andKrysta Rodriguez.[44]
In 2023, Henry co-wrote and co-starred inThe Conversation opposite Julia Harriman atPower Station at BerkleeNYC. The production was directed by Lear DeBessonet and music directed byAlex Lacamoire.[45]
In May 2024, it was announced Henry would star as Coalhouse Walker Jr. in a production ofRagtime atNew York City Center oppositeCaissie Levy andBrandon Uranowitz. The production opened on October 30 of that same year for a two week engagement.[46] Henry received rave reviews for his performance.[47] He’s set to reprise the role in a Broadway revival at theVivian Beaumont Theatre with performances set to begin in September 2025.[48]

Henry appeared in the firstSex and the City film in 2008.
Henry has also appeared on thetelevision seriesKings andNip/Tuck, as well as the2010short filmOnce Upon a Time in Australia.[49]
Henry also appeared in the role of Corporal Quincy Montclair on season 7 of the Lifetime seriesArmy Wives.
Henry also starred in thefilm adaptation of the musicaltick, tick... BOOM! asRoger Bart. He starred alongsideAndrew Garfield,Alexandra Shipp,Robin de Jesús,Vanessa Hudgens. It was released in November 2021. Henry received aBlack Reel Award nomination for his performance.
In December 2022, Henry starred asGaston inBeauty and the Beast: A 30th Celebration. He starred alongsideH.E.R.,Josh Groban,Martin Short,David Alan Grier,Shania Twain,Rizwan Manji, andRita Moreno.[50]
On September 23, 2008, Henry performed in a concert performance titledParty Worth Crashing in New York City.[51]
Henry, along withCorbin Bleu andAndréa Burns, was featured on "Dare to Go Beyond: The Album", by the nonprofit organization R.Evolución Latina. It was released on December 13, 2010, produced byLuis Salgado.[52]
On January 16, 2011, Henry,Laura Osnes, and Natalie Weiss were featured performers inKait Kerrigan andBree Lowdermilk'sYou Made This Tour concert at theLaurie Beechman Theatre.[53]
Henry performed in the92nd Street Y'sLyrics & Lyricists event, honoringBurton Lane, on February 14, 2011.[54]
On February 12, 2021, Henry released his EPGuarantee.[55]
On September 10, 2021, Henry released his debut albumGrow.[56]
On December 13, 2022 Henry released his singleCan't Nobody Tell Us Nothin'.[57]
In October 2024, he appeared onEisa Davis andLin-Manuel Miranda's musical concept albumWarriors. He sang the role of Wanya of The Bizzies.[58][59][60]
In October 2012, he married his college sweetheart, Cathryn Stringer.[61] He currently resides inMontclair, New Jersey.
