Joseph Calvitt Clarke Jr. (August 9, 1920 – May 6, 2004) was aUnited States district judge of theUnited States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia.
Clarke was born on August 9, 1920, inHarrisburg,Pennsylvania.[1] He received aBachelor of Science degree from theUniversity of Virginia in 1945 and aBachelor of Laws from theUniversity of Virginia School of Law in 1945.[1] He was in private practice inRichmond,Virginia, from 1945 to 1975.[1]
On December 11, 1974, Clarke was nominated by PresidentGerald Ford to a seat on theUnited States District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia vacated by JudgeWalter Edward Hoffman.[1] He was confirmed by theUnited States Senate on December 19, 1974, and received his commission on December 20, 1974.[1] He assumedsenior status on July 31, 1991. He served in that capacity until his death on May 6, 2004, inVirginia Beach, Virginia.[1] He was buried inHollywood Cemetery.[2]
