Joseph Batey (4 March 1867 – 21 February 1949) was aLabour Party politician in the United Kingdom.
Batey became acoal miner, before winning election as acheckweighman, and then becoming a full-time official for theDurham Miners' Association. A support of theLabour Party, Batey served on theSouth Shields Town Council andBoard of Guardians.[1]
He was elected at the1922 election asmember of parliament (MP) for theSpennymoor constituency inCounty Durham, which he had contested unsuccessfully at the1918 election.[1] Batey held the seat until heresigned from the House of Commons on 6 July 1942, by the procedural device of accepting the post ofSteward of the Manor of Northstead.
