Jose Karingozhackal Mani (born 29 May 1965) is an Indian politician andMP (Rajya Sabha) and formerMP (Lok Sabha) fromKerala. He is the son of veteran politicianK. M. Mani[1] and the Chairman ofKerala Congress (M).[2][3]

He unsuccessfully contested theparliament election in 2004 fromMuvattupuzha constituency, losing toP. C. Thomas who contested as the candidate ofNational Democratic Alliance (NDA).[4] In 2007, he was elected as the General Secretary ofKerala Congress (Mani) party.[1] He won the2009 Lok Sabha election from theKottayam constituency, by a margin of more than 70,000 votes overK. Suresh Kurup ofCPI(M). He was re-elected in 2014 with a winning margin of 120,599 overMathew T. Thomas ofJD(S).

He is also the President of Vikasana Sena, a youth association associated with Prateeksha Rotary Centre for Mentally Challenged Children.[5]

As Chairman of Kerala Congress (M)

After the death ofKEC(M) chairmanK.M Mani, a power struggle erupted in the party between Jose K. Mani faction andP. J. Joseph faction. The Election Commission intervened and ruled in favor ofJose K Mani. Later, the faction led byP.J Joseph merged withKerala Congress and faction led by Jose K Mani elected K.M Mani's son Jose K Mani as the Chairman ofKerala Congress (M).

Expulsion from UDF

After the death ofKM Mani, as per a previous agreement,UDF asked the Mani faction to give up the post of Kottayam DistrictPanchayat presidency which they dismissed.[6]UDF expelledKEC(M) from the alliance on 30 June 2020 citing the District Panchayat presidency dispute.[7] Later, Jose K. Mani and his partyKEC(M), joined theLDF(Kerala) in October 2020.[8][9]

Kerala Congress (M) joined hands with theLDF for the2020 Kerala local elections held in December and also for the2021 Kerala Legislative Assembly election. It is alleged that KC(M) allowed a CPI(M) party member[10] to contest as a KEC(M) candidate in thePiravom (State Assembly constituency). During the2021 Kerala Legislative Assembly election, Jose K. Mani was defeated[11] fromPala constituency for more than 15,000 votes to theUDF candidateMani C. Kappan.

Personal life

Jose K. Mani was born in aSyrian Catholic family toK. M. Mani and Kuttiyama on 29 May 1965 inPala, Kerala.[5] Jose did his schooling at St. Thomas Primary School, Pala and Montfort School, Yercaud, where South Indian actorVikram was his classmate.[5][12] He attendedLoyola College, Chennai for his undergraduate degree in B.Com and then graduated with aM.B.A fromPSG College of Arts and Science, Coimbatore.[5]
