José Pratas Romão (born 13 April 1954) is aPortuguese formerfootballwinger andmanager.
Born inBeja,Alentejo, Romão started playing for local clubC.D. Beja. He also representedVitória de Guimarães,AD Fafe,F.C. Penafiel,G.D. Riopele,G.C. Alcobaça andF.C. Vizela in a 15-year professional career.
Romão spent five seasons in thePrimeira Liga with Guimarães, never managing to be more than a reserve player.[1][2] His last campaign at that level was1982–83, being relegated with Alcobaça.[3] He retired in June 1984, aged only 30.
Romão started working as a manager immediately after retiring, being in charge as Vizela had their first experience in the top flight in1984–85 – the team finished in the 16th and last position in the league, being immediately relegated.[4] From the start of the1987–88 season until the end of the1999–2000 campaign he always worked in the Portuguese top tier, starting with Penafiel and being mainly in charge ofG.D. Chaves, which he led to the fifth place in1989–90 in a total of three stints.[5][6]
In the summer of 2000, Romão joinedAntónio Oliveira's staff at thePortugal national team, holding his position until the end of the2002 FIFA World Cup.[7] Subsequently, he was in charge of theunder-21 side,[8] and was also the nation's manager in theill-fated campaign at the2004 Summer Olympics inAthens.[9]
Romão started managing abroad in 2005 withWydad AC, then had spells withAl-Arabi SC (Qatar),Raja CA (two),[10][11]Kuwait SC[12] andAl-Arabi SC (Kuwait).[13] During his stint in the MoroccanBotola, he led both WAC and Raja to the national championship.[14]
