Jonathan Coyne (born 3 February 1958)[1] is an English actor known for playing Warden Edwin James onFox's short-lived series,Alcatraz (2012).[2] He also appeared as Dr. Lydgate inOnce Upon a Time in Wonderland andOnce Upon a Time[3] and recurred asGeorge de Mohrenschildt in11.22.63.

Early life and education

Coyne's earliest performances were in school plays. He played The Judge inHoward Barker'sHang of the Gaol and Phaeton in Ovid'sChariot of the Sun. When his performances received positive reviews in the national press, he decided to pursue an acting career.[4] He won a place at theRoyal Academy of Dramatic Art in London and upon his graduation, he received the Hannam Clarke Award.[5]

Career

His first role on TV was on an episode ofLondon's Burning in 1990. His next big role was in the mini-seriesGulliver's Travels, starringTed Danson. He appeared in many British TV series over the next few years, including guest appearances onEastEnders,Pulling andThe Bill. In 2003, he was cast inLara Croft: Tomb Raider – The Cradle of Life. In 2010, he was cast inThe Nutcracker in 3D.[6]

His biggest role to date was as Warden Edwin James onAlcatraz. He was later cast inWould You Rather andLondon Boulevard. In 2013, he was cast in the supporting film roles of a henchman inGangster Squad, and the right-hand man ofJohn Goodman's character inThe Hangover Part III.[7]

In 2018, he appeared in the third season of theAMCtelevision seriesPreacher, in the recurring role ofAllfather D'Daronique, which required him to wear afatsuit.

He appeared in 2020'sMa Rainey's Black Bottom, which was nominated for a SAG Ensemble Award.[1][8]
