Jonathan S. Bush (born March 10, 1969)[1] is anAmerican technology entrepreneur and politician, best known as the cofounder and formerchief executive officer ofathenahealth, aWatertown, Massachusetts-based healthcare technology company founded in 1997.[2][3] On June 6, 2018, Bush resigned from his position asCEO of athenahealth during an activist campaign byElliott Management.[4][5] In October 2025, he announced his candidacy forGovernor ofMaine in the 2026 election as aRepublican.[6]

Early life and education

Bush is the son of Josephine Colwell Bradley andJonathan Bush, cousin of U.S. PresidentGeorge W. Bush,[7] nephew of U.S. PresidentGeorge H. W. Bush, and brother of television presenterBilly Bush. He grew up inManhattan and attended theAllen-Stevenson School.

Bush graduated from thePhillips Academycollege preparatory school inAndover, Massachusetts.[8] He attendedBoston University for one year from 1988–1989, graduated fromWesleyan University in 1993 with aBachelor of Arts degree in The College of Social studies, and earned aMaster of Business Administration degree fromHarvard University in 1997.[2]

Just before coming to Wesleyan, Bush took time off from his studies to work on George H. W. Bush's 1988 presidential campaign. As an EMT, Bush spent a summer vacation during college operating a 911 response ambulance inNew Orleans. In 1991, Bush volunteered to become acombat medic at the start ofOperation Desert Storm, doing boot camp atFort Jackson inSouth Carolina, but did not ship out because the war ended before he finished.[8][9]

The business side of Bush's training stemmed from his time as an associate of J. Bush & Company, Inc., a firm founded by his father that assisted foreign embassies in banking, and as a consultant atBooz Allen Hamilton, where he was a member of its Managed Care Strategy Group.[10]

In 1997, Bush andTodd Park, a colleague from Booz Allen, founded Athena Women's Health, a women's health and birthing clinic housed in San Diego for soon-to-be, new, and current mothers. After Park's brother Ed Park helped develop its system, Athena Women's Health transformed into athenahealth, a healthcare technology platform offering a suite of services to help hospital and ambulatory providers coordinate care and work at the tops of their licenses. In 2000, Bush raised more than $10 million inventure capital funding to support athenahealth,[11] which launched a successfulIPO in 2007.[12] Bush was athenahealth's CEO until his resignation on June 6, 2018.[4]

Politics

On July 14, 2025, Bush formed an exploratory committee to prepare a run for theRepublican nomination in the2026 Maine gubernatorial election.[14] Bush held a campaign fundraiser inKennebunkport in August 2025,[15] and formally announced his campaign on October 8th.[16]

Honors and awards

In 2013, Bush was named CEO of the Year by the Massachusetts Technology Leadership Council (MassTLC).[19] In 2016 he received theTufts Medical Center's Ellen M. Zane Award for Visionary Leadership.[20]Fortune included Bush as a "disruptor" in its list of "34 Leaders Who Are Changing Healthcare," writing that "few are more persuasive—and outspoken—about the need to repair our healthcare system."[21]

Personal life

Bush is married and has six children. In May 2018, a report detailed Bush's verbal and physical abuse towards his first wife. Claims were dropped after further investigation.[22][23] He is currently married to Fay Rotenberg.
