Jonathan "JJ" Lunney (born 2 February 1998) is an Irish professionalfootballer who plays as amidfielder forLeague of Ireland Premier Division clubShelbourne. His previous clubs areSt Patrick's Athletic,Bohemians andWaterford.

Youth career

Lunney grew up inSwords, Dublin and began playing withMalahide United, from there he joined the academy ofEFL Championship clubPreston North End in 2014, before returning home to the under-19 side ofLeague of Ireland clubSt Patrick's Athletic in 2016.[1]

St Patrick's Athletic

Lunney made his first team debut forSt Patrick's Athletic on 21 October 2016, replacing the injuredLee Desmond from the bench in the 21st minute of a 3–1 defeat away toCork City atTurners Cross.[2] His performance in that game earned him his first senior start 4 days later, in a 5–2 win over championsDundalk atRichmond Park, with Lunney scoring the first goal of his career when he found the top corner for 25 yards Tim the 86th minute.[3] On 17 September 2016, he was an unused substitute in the2016 League of Ireland Cup final as his side defeatedLimerick 4–1 at theMarkets Field.[4] He got a lot more game time in the2017 season, making 28 appearances in all competitions in his first full season at senior level.[5]

Bohemians

On 24 November 2017, Lunney signed forDublin rivalsBohemians.[6] He scored his first goal for the club on 2 April 2018, an 83rd-minute penalty in a 2–2 draw withUCD in theLeague of Ireland Cup which his side won after a penalty shootout.[7] He scored five goals in 31 appearances in all competitions during the season.[8]

Waterford

On 30 October 2018, Lunney signed forLeague of Ireland Premier Division clubWaterford for the2019 season.[9] He scored 1 goal in 38 appearances in all competitions during his time with the club.[10]

Return to Bohemians

On 27 November 2019, Lunney returned toBohemians after a season in absence.[11] On 27 August 2020, he made his first appearance in European football, as his side were beaten in a penalty shootout away toHungarian clubFehérvár after a 0–0 draw in theUEFA Europa League.[12]

Shelbourne

On 3 December 2020, Lunney signed forLeague of Ireland First Division clubShelbourne.[13][14][15] On 1 October 2021, the team defeatedTreaty United 1–0 atTolka Park to claim the2021 League of Ireland First Division title to gain promotion to theLeague of Ireland Premier Division.[16] On 16 June 2022, he extended his contract until the end of 2023.[17] On 13 November 2022, he was part of the side that were on the receiving end of a recordFAI Cup final defeat as they were beaten 4–0 byDerry City at theAviva Stadium in the2022 FAI Cup final at theAviva Stadium.[18] On 20 July 2023, he signed a new contract with the club.[19] On 21 November 2024, he signed a new 3-year contract with the club.[20]
