Jonathan Grout (July 23, 1737 – September 8, 1807) was a member of the United States House of Representatives from Massachusetts. Grout was born inLunenburg in theProvince of Massachusetts Bay and served in theFirst United States Congress.[1]
His son, Jonathan Grout Jr., built the firstoptical telegraph in the United States, connectingMartha's Vineyard andBoston.[2][3]
A descendant of his wasEdward M. Grout (1861–1931), a lawyer andNew York City Comptroller.
