Jon Caramanica (born October 12, 1975) is an American journalist and pop music critic who writes forThe New York Times.[1][2] He is also known for writing abouthip-hop music.[3]
Born inBrooklyn, New York, Caramanica received his bachelor's degree fromHarvard University in 1997, after which he attendedGoldsmiths, University of London.[1][2] He has published articles inRolling Stone andSpin, before becoming a senior contributing writer forXXL. In 2006, he leftXXL to become the music editor forVibe,[2] a position he held until leaving the magazine in 2008.[4] He began working forThe New York Times in 2010, after previously having freelanced for the paper.[1] He also hosts the music podcastPopcast.[5] In 2020, he announced he is writing a book aboutKanye West, titledKANYE: How the College Dropout Changed America.[6] As of 2026, the book has not been released.
