Johnny Simmons is an American actor. He is known for his roles as Dylan Baxter inEvan Almighty (2007), Chip Dove inJennifer's Body (2009),"Young Neil" Nordegraf inScott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010) andScott Pilgrim Takes Off (2023), Cameron inThe To Do List (2013) withAubrey Plaza, Brad Hayes inThe Perks of Being a Wallflower (2012),serial killer Adam "Balloon Man" Kemper inElementary (2012), Peter Newmans inThe Late Bloomer (2016), and Shane inGirlboss (2017).

Career

Simmons landed his first feature film role in the 2007 comedyEvan Almighty. He portrayed Dylan Baxter, the oldest of the three sons ofSteve Carell's Evan Baxter andLauren Graham's Joan Baxter. He then starred in a number of films, including the 2009 children's comedyHotel for Dogs, oppositeJake T. Austin andEmma Roberts. Also in 2009, Simmons starred in the black comedy horror filmJennifer's Body as Chip Dove, the boyfriend ofAmanda Seyfried's character, Anita "Needy" Lesnicki.[2] In 2010, he starred in the comedy filmScott Pilgrim vs. the World, portrayingYoung Neil, a 20-year-old bass guitarist and fan of the fictional band Sex Bob-omb. In 2011, he was cast in a supporting role for theJonah Hill andChanning Tatum led comedy21 Jump Street (2012).[3]

Also in 2012, Simmons co-starred as the closeted quarterback Brad Hayes, alongsideLogan Lerman,Emma Watson, andEzra Miller, in the teen dramaThe Perks of Being a Wallflower.[3] The film is an adaptation of theStephen Chbosky novelof the same name. In February 2013, he was cast inThe CW's television drama filmBlink.[4] In 2013, he made a cameo appearance in the music video forDrake's single "Hold On, We're Going Home".[5] That same year, Simmons joined the comedy filmFrank and Cindy as GJ Erchternkamp, alongsideRene Russo andOliver Platt.[6] Also that same year, he starred in the short filmWhiplash, excerpted from a screenplay byDamien Chazelle, the complete version of which becamean Academy Award-winning feature-length film of the same name.[7] In 2014, he starred asJack London in theDiscovery Channel miniseriesKlondike, the channel's first scripted series, which detailed theKlondike Gold Rush in the 1890s.[8] In 2015, he co-starred as Jeff Jansen in the thriller filmThe Stanford Prison Experiment, and in 2016, had the lead role in four films, the border-set thrillerTranspecos, the comedy-musicalDreamland, the baseball dramaThe Phenom, andKevin Pollak's comedyThe Late Bloomer.[9]

On March 30, 2023, it was announced that Simmons would reprise his role as Young Neil in theNetflix seriesScott Pilgrim Takes Off.[10]

After a six-year hiatus, Simmons returned to live-action performance with a small role in the 2023 drama filmSing Sing.[11] Simmons played an unnamed inmate who was scammed out of five hundred dollars byClarence "Divine Eye" Maclin. He also appeared as a local deputy in the action-comedy filmBad Man.[12]
