John Wurts (August 13, 1792 – April 23, 1861) was a member of theU.S. House of Representatives fromPennsylvania and a president of theDelaware and Hudson Canal Company.
Wurts was born inFlanders, New Jersey on August 13, 1792. After his father's death in 1793, the family relocated toMontville, New Jersey, and then relocated again, this time toPhiladelphia, Pennsylvania. He graduated fromPrinceton College in 1813, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1816, and began to practice law in Philadelphia.
He was a member of thePennsylvania House of Representatives in 1817 and served in thePennsylvania State Senate in 1820.
Wurts was elected to theNineteenth Congress, but was not a candidate for renomination. From 1827 to 1831, he served as a United States district attorney and was a member of thePhiladelphia City Council.
Along with his brothers William, Maurice, andCharles, he helped found theDelaware and Hudson Canal Company and served as its president from 1831 to 1858.
Although he traveled abroad for his health in 1859, Wurts failed to recover and died inRome in 1861. At the time of his death, Rome was under thedirect rule of the Pope, withItalian unification not reaching completion until 1871. His remains were returned to the United States and interred in the family cemetery atPleasant Mills, New Jersey, nearBatsto, New Jersey.
