John Wilson Campbell (February 23, 1782 – September 24, 1833) was aUnited States representative fromOhio and aUnited States district judge of theUnited States District Court for the District of Ohio.
Born on February 23, 1782, near Miller's Iron Works[1] inAugusta County,Virginia,[2] Campbell attended the common schools, taught school, thenread law in 1808.[2] He was admitted to the bar and entered private practice inWest Union,Ohio from 1808 to 1826.[2] He was prosecutor forAdams County, Ohio from 1809 to 1817.[2] He was aJustice of the Peace forTiffin Township, Adams County, Ohio from 1809 to 1815.[2] He was a member of theOhio House of Representatives in 1810, and from 1815 to 1817.[2]
Campbell was elected as aDemocratic-Republican fromOhio's 2nd congressional district andOhio's 5th congressional district to theUnited States House of Representatives of the15th through the17th United States Congresses. reelected as a Jackson Democratic-Republican to the18th United States Congress, and as aNational Republican to the19th United States Congress, serving from March 4, 1817, to March 3, 1827.[1] He was Chairman of the Committee on Private Land Claims for the16th through the 19th United States Congresses.[1] He declined to be a candidate for renomination in 1826.[1] Following his departure from Congress, Campbell resumed private practice inBrown County, Ohio from 1826 to 1829.[2]
Campbell was nominated by PresidentAndrew Jackson on March 6, 1829, to a seat on theUnited States District Court for the District of Ohio vacated by JudgeWilliam Creighton Jr.[2] He was confirmed by theUnited States Senate on March 7, 1829, and received his commission the same day.[2] His service terminated on September 24, 1833, due to his death inDelaware,Delaware County, Ohio.[2] He was interred in theNorth Graveyard inColumbus, Ohio.[1]
