John Tillinger (born June 28, 1938) is atheatre director andactor.
Joachim Ferdinand Tillinger was born inTabriz,Iran. His father wasGerman Jewish and his mother wasProtestant.[1] Tillinger was raised inEngland, where he was first exposed to the theatre.
He spent his early years onBroadway as an actor, appearing inA Day in the Death of Joe Egg (standby "Freddie", 1968),[2]Othello ("Roderigo", 1970),[3]Hay Fever ("Sandy Tyrell", 1970),[4] andThe Changing Room ("Colin Jagger", 1973).[5]
Tillinger's first Broadway directing credit wasSolomon's Child in 1982.[6] Since then he has directed:[7]Love Letters (1989) withColleen Dewhurst andJason Robards,The Price (1992) withEli Wallach,Three Men on a Horse (1993) andThe Sunshine Boys (1997), both withJack Klugman andTony Randall,Inherit the Wind (1996) withGeorge C. Scott andCharles Durning,Night Must Fall (1999) withMatthew Broderick,[8]Judgment at Nuremberg (2001) withGeorge Grizzard andMaximilian Schell,[9]Say Goodnight, Gracie (2002) withFrank Gorshin,[10] andAbsurd Person Singular (2005) withPaxton Whitehead andSam Robards.[11]

He has directed numerousregional theatre productions. He directedThe Wedding Banquet at the Village Theatre,Seattle,Washington, in 2003.[18]
He was the literary consultant for theLong Wharf Theatre,New Haven, Connecticut from 1975 to 1997.[19] Additionally, he was the associate artistic director at Long Wharf Theatre.[20] He directed many plays at the Long Wharf Theatre, includingThis Story of Yours andSolomon's Child (1980),Another Country (1982), and most recentlyPaddywhack andBroken Glass (1994).[21]
Tillinger was married to actress/directorDorothy Lyman from 1971 to 1978. They have two children, actor Sebastian Tillinger and producerEmma Tillinger.[22][21]
