John Edward Tew (3 September 1905 – 28 December 1992) was anEnglish first-classcricketer and solicitor.
The son of E. W. Tew and his wife,Hon. Catherine Isabel Hawke (sister ofLord Hawke),[1][2] he was born in September 1905 atWigginton, Yorkshire. He was educated atEton College,[3] before going up toMagdalen College, Oxford.[4] While studying at Oxford, he made a single appearance infirst-class cricket forOxford University againstLeicestershire atOxford in 1927.[5] Batting twice in the match, he was dismissed in the Oxford first-innings for 4 runs byAlan Shipman, while in their second-innings he was dismissed byAlec Skelding for 9 runs.[6]
After graduating from Oxford, he became a solicitor and moved toBritish India where he practised. He played first-class cricket while in India for theEuropeans cricket team, mostly in theBombay Pentangular, making his debut shortly after arriving in India in December 1928 against theMuslims. He played ten first-class matches for the Europeans up until January 1948,[5] scoring 335 runs at anaverage of 17.63 and a high score of 76.[7] He married the tennis playerBarbara Drew in England atAlderley Edge in September 1935.[2][8] Tew was an emergency commission in theBritish Indian Army during theSecond World War in August 1942.[9] He later returned to England, where he continued to work as a solicitor.[10] Tew died in December 1992 atEwshot, Hampshire.[3] His brother,Anthony, also played first-class cricket.
