John Ternus is an American business executive who has served asApple Inc.'ssenior vice president of hardware engineering since 2021, reporting toCEOTim Cook. He leads the company's hardware engineering teams.[1]
Ternus began his career as a mechanical engineer designingvirtual reality headsets at Virtual Research Systems.[4] He joined Apple in 2001 as a member of the product design team, working first on theApple Cinema Display.[5][6] In 2013, he was appointed vice president of hardware engineering underDan Riccio, overseeing the development ofAirPods,Mac andiPad.
In 2020, he was also put in charge ofiPhone hardware, previously overseen directly by Riccio.[7][8] He was promoted to senior vice president of hardware engineering in 2021, replacing Riccio,[7] and was put in charge ofApple Watch hardware in late 2022.[9]Bloomberg News reported that Ternus was the "youngest member of Apple's executive team", and described him as "charismatic and well-liked".[7][8] He has been widely reported by media to be a potential successor toTim Cook as the company's next chief executive.[5][10]
Ternus has presented new hardware at severalWWDC events, revealing refreshes of theiMac andMacBook Pro, the new 2018iPad Pros, theiMac Pro and the completely redesigned 2019Mac Pro. He has subsequently appeared as a regular presenter at Apple events.[11][12][13]
