John Philip Carlin (born 1973) is an American attorney who served as actingdeputy attorney general in the United StatesDepartment of Justice from January to April 2021.[1][2] From April 2021 to September 2022, Carlin was principalassociate deputy attorney general under Deputy Attorney GeneralLisa Monaco.[3] He previously served asUnited States assistant attorney general for the National Security Division from April 2014 to October 15, 2016,[4][5] and as chief of staff toRobert Mueller during his time asdirector of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.[6][7]

Early life and education

Carlin was born in 1973 inNew York City.[8] He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree fromWilliams College and aJuris Doctor fromHarvard Law School. While at Harvard, Carlin was the articles editor of theHarvard Journal on Legislation.

Career

Carlin joined theUnited States Department of Justice through the Attorney General’s Honors Program. Carlin chairs theAspen Institute’s Cybersecurity and Technology policy program, and was a Fellow at theBelfer Center for Science and International Affairs.[9] Carlin was a partner atMorrison & Foerster until January 20, 2021, when he was appointed by PresidentJoe Biden to serve as actingdeputy attorney general.[10][1][2] Following his departure from the DOJ, Carlin returned to private practice atPaul, Weiss in October 2022 as co-head of its cybersecurity and data protection practice.[11]

Carlin has been featured inThe New York Times,Vanity Fair,The Washington Post,The Wall Street Journal, theLos Angeles Times, andUSA Today. He has appeared on60 Minutes,Meet the Press,Charlie Rose,NPR, andCNN.[12][13][14]
