John Mateer (born April 28, 2004) is an Americancollege footballquarterback for theOklahoma Sooners. He previously played for theWashington State Cougars.
Mateer was born inLittle Elm, Texas and attendedLittle Elm High School.[1][2] As a senior, Mateer threw for 2,449 yards, setting the school record for single season passing yards.[3] He finished his high school career totaling 7,060 passing yards, 1,223 rushing yards and 88 total touchdowns.[4] A three-star recruit, he committed to playcollege football atWashington State University.[4]
After redshirting in 2022, Mateer threw for 235 yards and two touchdowns, in addition to rushing for 93 yards and three touchdowns as a redshirt freshman.[5] Entering the2024 season, he competed withZevi Eckhaus for Washington State's starting quarterback job.[6][7] Eventually, Mateer was named the Cougars starting quarterback for their first game of the season againstPortland State.[8][9] In his first career start, he threw for 352 yards and five touchdowns, while also rushing for 55 yards and a touchdown, leading Washington State to a 70–30 victory.[10] Mateer finished the season throwing for 3,139 yards, rushing for 826 yards, and totaling 44 touchdowns.[11] He was named the offensive "top performer" of the season for thePac-12 Conference.[12] On December 16, 2024, Mateer entered thetransfer portal.[13][14]
On December 18, 2024, Mateer announced his decision to transfer to theUniversity of Oklahoma to play for theOklahoma Sooners.[15][16] This decision was fueled by many things including a missed phone call fromBaker Mayfield, and his standing relationship with newly hired offensive coordinatorBen Arbuckle, whom he had played for at Washington State.[17][18] In the 2025 season opener against theIllinois State Redbirds, he broke the school record for number of passing yards in a debut with 392, in a 35–3 win.[19] The following week against No. 15Michigan, he completed 21 passes for 270 yards and a touchdown, while also rushing for 74 yards and two touchdowns, leading the Sooners to a 24–13 victory.[20]
After the Sooners beat theAuburn Tigers in their regular season game on September 20, head coachBrent Venables announced that Mateer had suffered an injury to his throwing hand and would undergo surgery in Los Angeles, CA. As a result, sophomoreMichael Hawkins Jr. was elevated to starting quarterback. The surgery on Mateer’s hand was completed on Wednesday, September 24 by Dr. Steven Shin ofCedars-Sinai Medical Center, and confirmed as a success by Mateer himself the following day.[21]
TheOklahoma Sooners football team finished the regular season with Mateer as signal caller with a 10-2 record, and making theCollege Football Playoff as a result.[22]
Mateer will return to theOklahoma Sooners for the 2026 season as a senior.[23]

On August 11, 2025, screenshots began to surface of Mateer'sVenmo account, depicting transaction descriptions that alluded to him partaking insports betting while playing for Washington State in 2022.[24][25] The next day, Mateer denied any involvement in sports gambling, stating that the transaction descriptions were "inside jokes" between his friends.[26][27]
