John F. MacGovern (born July 14, 1951) is an American politician who represented the 2nd Middlesex District in theMassachusetts House of Representatives from 1983 to 1991.[1] He was the Republican nominee in theMassachusetts's 5th congressional district election in 1990, losing to incumbentChester G. Atkins 52% to 48%.[2] He later moved to Vermont. He was an unsuccessful candidate for theVermont Senate in 2004[3] and 2006.[4] He unsuccessfully ran as the Republican nominee for theUnited States Senate seat held byBernie Sanders in the2012 election.[5]
