John Kite (died 1537) was successivelyArchbishop of Armagh, 1513–1521, andBishop of Carlisle, 1521–1537.

Biography

John Kite was educated atEton College and then atKing's College, Cambridge,[1] where he was graduated Bachelor ofCanon Law. He was appointed aprebendary ofExeter Cathedral andSub-Dean of theKing's Chapel, Westminster in 1510. From 1510–1518 he wasprebendary of Stratton in thediocese of Salisbury.

Kite added the gate toRose Castle in the 16th century.[2]

In 1518, asarchbishop, he accompaniedJohn Bourchier, 2nd Baron Berners on an embassy toCharles I ofSpain and was present at theField of the Cloth of Gold in 1520. In 1522 he was living atRose Castle,Cumberland when he was visited by DrWilliam Burbank,Archdeacon ofCarlisle Cathedral, of whom he wrote toCardinal Wolsey. His alliance with Wolsey may explain his quick promotion. He took theOath of Supremacy in 1534.
