John Harvey (27 September 1911 – 19 July 1982) was an Englishactor.[1][2] He appeared in 52films, twotelevision films and made 70televisionguest appearances between 1948 and 1979.
Born inLondon,England, he began hisacting career on thestage in the 1930s as one of the Harry Hanson's Court Players at thePeterborough Repertory. While there, he met the actressDiana King.
Harvey and King were married, remaining together for more than forty years, until his death.
During theSecond World War, he was commissioned in theRoyal Air Force. Post-war, he performed at theTheatre Royal inDrury Lane, London, for some four years, during theWest End runs ofRodgers and Hammerstein'sSouth Pacific andThe King and I.
Harvey's film debut was in the role as Eddie in theBritishcrimedramaA Gunman Has Escaped (1948), in which he was theleadingstar.[3] Harvey then moved tocharacter roles and five films later played Inspector Loomis inHitchcock'sStage Fright (1950) starringJane Wyman andRichard Todd.[4] His next role was as Bland in the dramaChance of a Lifetime (1950).[5]
Harvey's television debut was as Angelo Verona in theBBC filmOn the Spot (1948).[6] He played Buster Cox in theUnited Artistsfilm noir crime/thrillerThe Man with My Face (1951) starringBarry Nelson.[7]
Among his guest appearances on series television was his role as Sir William Duffy inDr. Finlay's Casebook (1962) and twoDoctor Who appearances – Professor Brett inThe War Machines (1966), and Officia inThe Macra Terror (1967), all for the BBC.[8][9][10]
John Harvey died at age 70 inHenley-on-Thames,Oxfordshire.[11]
