John Hamal Hubbard (born October 6 or 7, 1945) is an Americanmathematician and professor atCornell University and theUniversité de Provence. He is known for the mathematical contributions he made withAdrien Douady in the field ofcomplex dynamics, including a study of theMandelbrot set. One of their most important results is that theMandelbrot set isconnected.
Hubbard graduated with aDoctorat d'État fromUniversité de Paris-Sud in 1973 under the direction ofAdrien Douady; his thesis was entitledSur Les Sections Analytiques de La Courbe Universelle de Teichmüller and was published by theAmerican Mathematical Society.
Hubbard and his wifeBarbara Burke Hubbard wrote the bookVector Calculus, Linear Algebra, and Differential Forms: A Unified Approach.
He has also published three volumes of a book onTeichmüller theory and its applications to four revolutionary theorems ofWilliam Thurston.
Hubbard is married toBarbara Burke Hubbard, a science writer. Together they have a son and three younger daughters.[1]
