Sir John Basil Rowland GrindrodKBE[1] (14 December 1919[2] – 4 January 2009) was an English-born AustralianAnglican bishop. He was thePrimate of Australia from 1982 to 1989.
Grindrod was born inAughton, Lancashire,England.[3] He was educated atRepton School;Queen's College, Oxford[4] (MA Oxon); andLincoln Theological College. He wasordained a deacon in 1949 and a priest in 1952. He served as acurate at St Michael'sHulme, Manchester and then inBundaberg, Queensland. He heldincumbencies at All Souls'Ancoats, Manchester; and, moving to Australia, inEmerald, Queensland and NorthRockhampton, Queensland whileArchdeacon ofRockhampton.;[5] andChrist Church, South Yarra.[6]
Grindrod was theBishop of Riverina from 1966 to 1971 and thenBishop of Rockhampton from 1971 to 1981. He was afterwards theArchbishop of Brisbane[7] until 1989, additionally serving asPrimate of theAnglican Church of Australia from 1982 to 1989. He took Australian citizenship in 1982 and was awarded a knighthood (KBE) in the 1983 New Year's Day Honours for services to religion.
Most of Grindrod's retirement years were spent inMurwillumbah in northernNew South Wales then, from 2006, inHelensvale on theGold Coast. He died, aged 89, on 4 January 2009, after a long illness.[8]
