John Sanders Counselman (February 18, 1880 – March 29, 1955) was an Americancollege football player and coach, professor ofmathematics, and civil engineer.[1] He played forVirginia Tech withHunter Carpenter.[2] He also attended theUniversity of Michigan.[3][4] Counselman coachedCumberland in1905, and forSamford (then Howard) from 1906 to 1908, finishing after just the first two games of the latter season. He is the first coach in Samford history. Counselman was selected as a substitute for theWashington Post'sAll-Southern team.[5]
Counselman was a professor at theCollege of William & Mary andGeorgia Tech. He also taught in high schools inBirmingham, Alabama andGadsden, Alabama and was the superintendent of schools forTallahassee, Florida. Counselman died of a heart attack on March 29, 1955, at this home in Gadsden.[6]
