John James Charles (May 9, 1944 – June 16, 2019) was an Americanfootballcornerback andsafety who played eight seasons in theNational Football League (NFL). He playedcollege football atPurdue University where he was anAll-American in1966 and theRose Bowl MVP in leading theBoilermakers overUSC on January 2. Charles prepped atLinden High School inLinden, New Jersey. He was inducted into the Purdue Intercollegiate Athletic Hall of Fame on April 18, 2015.

Charles was a first round selection in the1967 NFL/AFL draft, taken by theBoston Patriots. In early October1970, he was sent toMinnesota as compensation after Boston signed quarterbackJoe Kapp.[1] He played for theHouston Oilers from1971 through1974.

Charles died in Houston at age 76 in 2019.[2][3]
