John E. Carlstrom (born 1957) is an Americanastrophysicist, and Professor, Departments of Astronomy and Astrophysics, and Physics, at theUniversity of Chicago.[1]
He graduated fromVassar College with an A.B. in 1981, and from theUniversity of California, Berkeley with a Ph.D. in 1988.
Carlstrom specializes in measurements of theCosmic Microwave Background, and has led several experiments, including theDegree Angular Scale Interferometer, theSunyaev-Zel'dovich Array, and theSouth Pole Telescope.
He is also known for manufacturing theGunn oscillators used at several millimeter and submillimeter observatories, such as theBIMA array, theCaltech Submillimeter Observatory and theJames Clerk Maxwell Telescope. These oscillators produced thelocal oscillator signal for the observatorys'heterodyne receivers.[2][3][4]
