John Christopher Reilly (born May 24, 1965)[ 1] [ 2] is an American actor. He is known as acharacter actor taking leading and supporting roles in independent drama films and studio comedies. He gained exposure through his supporting roles inCasualties of War (1989),Days of Thunder (1990),Hard Eight (1996),Boogie Nights (1997),Magnolia (1999),Gangs of New York (2002) andThe Aviator (2004). Reilly was nominated for theAcademy Award for Best Supporting Actor and thecorresponding Golden Globe Award for his role in the musical filmChicago (2002). Reilly's other notable films includeThe River Wild (1994),The Thin Red Line (1998), andThe Hours (2002).
Reilly gained prominence for his roles in comedy films such as Cal Naughton Jr. inTalladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby (2006). He then went on to play the title character inWalk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story (2007), and Dale Doback, one of the two step brothers, inStep Brothers (2008). Meanwhile, Reilly began co-starring as Dr. Steve Brule in the comedic television seriesTim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job! (2007–2010), which led to the spin-off seriesCheck It Out! with Dr. Steve Brule (2010–2016). He voiced the title character in theWreck It Ralph films (2012–2018). Early life and education [ edit ] Reilly was born inChicago , Illinois,[ 2] the fifth of six children.[ 6] His father was ofIrish andScottish descent, and his mother was ofLithuanian ancestry.[ 7] [ 6] [ 8] [ 9] His father ran an industrial linen supply company.[ 10] [ 11] Reilly has described himself as being mischievous during his childhood, highlighting an event when he was 12 in which he and his friends stole 500 boxes ofSugar Corn Pops from a freight train.[ 12] Reilly grew up in theChicago Lawn neighborhood.[ 13]
Reilly was raisedCatholic [ 14] [ 15] and attendedBrother Rice High School .[ 16] [ 17] He is an alumnus ofThe Theatre School at DePaul University in Chicago.[ 6]
1988–1995: Career beginnings[ edit ] Reilly made his film debut in theBrian De Palma war filmCasualties of War as PFC Herbert Hatcher in 1989.[ 18] [ 19] Although his role was written as a small one, De Palma liked Reilly's performance so much that the role was significantly expanded.[ 20] He played Buck,Tom Cruise 's character'sNASCAR crew member inTony Scott 'sDays of Thunder in June 1990.[ 21] That September, he played an Irish hoodlum named Stevie McGuire in the crime filmState of Grace , which starredSean Penn ;[ 22] Reilly had previously appeared as a monk in the comedyWe're No Angels (1989), which also starred Penn.[ 23] In 1992'sHoffa , Reilly playedJimmy Hoffa 's (Jack Nicholson ) associate who testifies against him at Hoffa's trial.[ 24] Reilly appeared in a supporting role inWhat's Eating Gilbert Grape (1993), playing one of the titular character's (played byJohnny Depp ) friends.[ 25] His next role was inThe River Wild (1994), in which Reilly appeared alongsideKevin Bacon as a pair of criminals who terrorize a family during a rafting trip.[ 26] In 1995, Reilly appeared in the psychological thrillerDolores Claiborne as a policeconstable and in the dramaGeorgia as a drug-addicted drummer in the bandJennifer Jason Leigh 's character joins.[ 27] [ 28]
1996–2003: Critical acclaim[ edit ] InPaul Thomas Anderson 's directorial debut filmHard Eight (1996), Reilly played a near homeless man inReno , Nevada, who is taken under the wing of a senior gambler (Philip Baker Hall ).[ 18] [ 29] Reilly collaborated with Anderson on other films, playing apornographic actor inBoogie Nights (1997);[ 18] a deeply religious police officer inMagnolia (1999);[ 17] [ 18] and a cameo in the music video forFiona Apple 's single "Across the Universe".[ 30] Terrence Malick 's ensemble war film,The Thin Red Line (1998) featured Reilly in a supporting role that was written as a larger one, but much of his scenes were deleted along with many other cast members.[ 31] In 1999, Reilly starred in the independent filmThe Settlement alongsideWilliam Fichtner , whichVariety writer Robert Koehler dismissed as a "write-off" despite praising his performance.[ 32] That same year, Reilly played one of the newspaper managing editors in the romantic comedy filmNever Been Kissed .[ 33] InSam Raimi 's sports dramaFor Love of the Game , released the same year, Reilly played fictional baseballcatcher Gus Sinski.[ 34]
The box office hitThe Perfect Storm was his only release of 2000 and featured Reilly as a veteran crew member on theAndrea Gail fishing vessel which was caught in the1991 Perfect Storm .[ 35] In the Jennifer Jason Leigh andAlan Cumming directed comedyThe Anniversary Party (2001), he played director Mac Forsyth.[ 36] In 2002, Reilly played a stoner husband in a lackluster marriage toJennifer Aniston 's character, who cheats on him with a younger man played byJake Gyllenhaal , inMiguel Arteta 's comedy-dramaThe Good Girl .[ 37] Later that year, Reilly appeared in three of the year'sAcademy Award for Best Picture nominees –Chicago ,Gangs of New York andThe Hours . InChicago , he played Amos Hart, Roxanne's (Renée Zellweger ) trusting husband and was nominated for theAcademy Award for Best Supporting Actor , as well as theGolden Globe forBest Supporting Actor .[ 18] [ 38] [ 39] Zellweger remarked that "John is so often the best thing about the movies he's in" and criticRoger Ebert praised the "pathetic sincere naivete" that Reilly brought to the role.[ 40] [ 41] Martin Scorsese 'sGangs of New York featured Reilly as corrupt 19th-centuryconstable "Happy Jack" Mulraney, whileStephen Daldry 's dramaThe Hours saw him play the husband toJulianne Moore 's character.[ 40] Reilly made a brief appearance in the comedyAnger Management (2003) as amonk .[ 42]
2004–2011: Transition to comedy[ edit ] Reilly has said that as a child, he was influenced by the pathos of the great clownEmmett Kelly . In a 2025 interview onThe Late Show with Stephen Colbert , he called Kelly a "genius" and said he pays homage to him with a painting of the hobo clown in his office.[ 43]
Reilly in February 2007 Reilly appeared inMartin Scorsese 's 2004Howard Hughes biopic ,The Aviator , asNoah Dietrich , Howard Hughes's (Leonardo DiCaprio ) trusted business partner. Of the role Reilly said, "Noah was almost a father figure to Hughes ... Howard would have a scheme, and it was Noah who had to say, 'We don't have the money.' He was one of his few friends."[ 44] He played the lead role in the crime filmCriminal (2004), withDiego Luna andMaggie Gyllenhaal . Based on the Argentine filmNine Queens (2000), Stephen Holden ofThe New York Times felt that "John C. Reilly may be one of our finer character actors, but his portrayal of Richard Gaddis, a gimlet-eyed con man, inCriminal allows too many vestiges of the duped schlub of a husband he played inChicago to leak into his performance."[ 45] Reilly reportedly quit the 2005Lars von Trier filmManderlay to protest the on-set killing of a donkey.[ 46] He played the lead in one ofMiranda July 's short films,Are You the Favorite Person of Anybody? (2005).[ 47] He was in theJennifer Connelly -led horror filmDark Water (2005) as the manager of a mysterious hotel.[ 48] Reilly co-starred inAdam McKay 's comedy about NASCAR drivers entitledTalladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby in August 2006 as Cal Naughton Jr., the best friend and teammate of the title character, played byWill Ferrell .[ 17] The film was successful, grossing $163 million worldwide.[ 49] He appeared inRobert Altman 's last filmA Prairie Home Companion that same year,[ 50] in addition to making an uncredited cameo appearance inTenacious D in The Pick of Destiny as aSasquatch .[ 51]
Reilly at the 2009Los Angeles Film Festival premiere ofPonyo Reilly frequently appeared on the sketch comedy programTim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job! from 2007 to 2010 as inept doctor and television presenterDr. Steve Brule . The role led to thespin-off seriesCheck It Out! with Dr. Steve Brule , which aired from 2010 to 2016 and was written and produced by Reilly.[ 52] In 2007, Reilly starred as the title character in parody bio-picWalk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story , singing various songs, parodyingJohnny Cash ,Ray Charles and others.[ 53] He received twoGolden Globe nominations,Best Actor – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy andBest Original Song for the film's title song "Walk Hard".[ 54] The next year, Reilly reunited with Ferrell to star inStep Brothers , playing middle-agedstep brothers forced to live together.[ 55] Also that year, he was among the many notable actors to perform in the online political musical,Proposition 8 – The Musical ,[ 56] voiced himself inThe Simpsons episode "Any Given Sundance ", and co-starred alongsideSeann William Scott inThe Promotion .[ 57] [ 58] In 2009, he played vampireLarten Crepsley in the filmCirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant and voiced "5" in9 .[ 59] [ 60] Reilly starred in the 2010 filmCyrus as a divorcé beginning a new relationship.[ 61] Reilly received aSatellite Award nomination forBest Actor – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy and anIndependent Spirit Award for Best Male Lead nomination for his critically acclaimed performance.[ 62] [ 63]
In early 2011, Reilly collaborated with director Miguel Arteta for a second time with the comedyCedar Rapids , starringEd Helms .New York Daily News critic Elizabeth Weizxman considered Reilly a stand out in the film and he received anIndependent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Male nomination.[ 64] Reilly co-starred alongsideEzra Miller and Oscar-winnerTilda Swinton in the British-American dramaWe Need to Talk About Kevin , based on thenovel byLionel Shriver . His character in the film was Franklin, the father of the troubled Kevin;[ 65] his performance was described as being "heartbreakingly sweet" bySlate criticDana Stevens .[ 66] Next, he co-starred in the comedy-dramaTerri alongsideJacob Wysocki , playing a school principal who takes an interest in a teenage misfit.[ 67] His last release of 2011 wasRoman Polanski 's black comedy-dramaCarnage , which takes place mostly in a single apartment. It also starred Oscar-winnersJodie Foster as his wife, andKate Winslet andChristoph Waltz as another married couple who engage in a conflict after their children get into a fight.[ 68] Reilly was approached to appear in a production of the play it was based on,God of Carnage , but he couldn't fit it into his schedule and remarked "I think I've spent enough time in that apartment".[ 69]
2012–present: Blockbuster films[ edit ] Reilly voiced the title character in the 2012 animated filmWreck-It Ralph ,[ 70] which follows anarcade game villain who is determined to prove himself as the hero. Reilly made contributions to the film's script.[ 71] The film was positively received,[ 72] withLos Angeles Times writer Betsy Sharkey saying, "The movie's subversive sensibility and old-school/new-school feel are a total kick."[ 73] Wreck-It Ralph not only grossed over $471 million but also a sequel titledRalph Breaks the Internet was released in November 2018.[ 74] [ 75] [ 76] Also that year, Reilly appeared inTim and Eric's Billion Dollar Movie as the dim-witted Taquito and made an uncredited cameo appearance in the comedyThe Dictator , starringSacha Baron Cohen .[ 77] [ 78] He had a cameo in the 2013 comedy sequelAnchorman 2: The Legend Continues , playing the ghost ofConfederate General Stonewall Jackson in the film's fight scene.[ 79]
Reilly at the 2012 San Diego Comic-Con In 2014, Reilly narrated thenature documentary Bears .[ 80] He playedNova Corps corpsmanRhomann Dey in theMarvel Studios filmGuardians of the Galaxy , released in August 2014.[ 81] Reilly began co-starring in the animated television seriesStone Quackers onFXX in January 2015.[ 82] In addition to voicing the inept police officer Barry, Reilly also executive produced the series.[ 82] [ 83] 2015 saw him appear in five films: the dramaEntertainment ;[ 84] Yorgos Lanthimos ' comedy-dramaThe Lobster as Robert, a man with alisp who is given 45 days to find a romantic partner or otherwise be turned into an animal;[ 85] the fantasy horrorTale of Tales , in which he played a king who tries to conceive a child with his queen–played bySalma Hayek –through an unconventional method,[ 86] and the Englishdub of theStudio Ghibli animated filmWhen Marnie Was There .[ 87] Reilly also starred in and co-wrote the television specialBagboy , reprising his role as Dr. Steve Brule in a fictional television pilot for a sitcom created by Brule.[ 88] It aired on February 21, 2015, withVanity Fair writer Melissa Locker saying "If you get it, the show is knockout hilarious, but truthfully, it is not for everyone and Reilly is O.K. with that."[ 89]
Reilly voiced a sheep in the ensemble cast of the animated musical comedySing , which was released in December 2016.[ 90] Reilly appeared in the 2017 monster film rebootKong: Skull Island , as Hank Marlow, a World War II lieutenant who has spent 28 years stranded on the titular island.[ 91] [ 92] The actor, who described his character as "essentially a love-letter to Chicago", was singled out for praise for his performance out of what is generally considered to be an underwhelming ensemble cast.[ 93] Film criticMatt Zoller Seitz noted that Reilly "steals the film instantly and never gives it back" in playing the "wisecracking castaway", andOwen Gleiberman praised his performance for being "terrifically dry and sly" in what could have been a cliché character.[ 94] [ 95]
Reilly co-starred withSteve Coogan in the 2018 biopicStan & Ollie about the comicdouble act Laurel and Hardy , with Reilly portrayingOliver Hardy and CooganStan Laurel .[ 96] Also that year, he played hitman Eli Sisters inThe Sisters Brothers , based on thePatrick deWitt Western novel, withJoaquin Phoenix co-starring as his brother Charlie,Jacques Audiard directing, and Reilly as a producer.[ 97] Reilly himself optioned the rights in 2011,[ 98] and production took place in the summer of 2017.[ 99] In 2018, Reilly playedDr. Watson in a comedic adaptation of theSherlock Holmes stories,Holmes & Watson ; Will Ferrell played Holmes.[ 100] In the same year, Reilly reprised his role as Wreck-It Ralph inRalph Breaks the Internet ,[ 101] and again in 2023 for Disney's centenary short filmOnce Upon a Studio .

Reilly at the2015 Cannes Film Festival In 1998, Reilly appeared, along withGiovanni Ribisi andWinona Ryder , asJon Spencer Blues Explosion in their video "Talk About The Blues".[ 103] In 2002, he played the role of Amos Hart,Roxie Hart 's naïve husband, in the musical filmChicago . In 2006, he performed two songs onRogue's Gallery: Pirate Ballads, Sea Songs, and Chanteys : "Fathom the Bowl" and "My Son John".[ 104] In 2007, Reilly starred in thebiopic parody Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story . In addition to his acting role, he also performed as a vocalist and songwriter on the movie'ssoundtrack , for which he was nominated for aGrammy .[ 105] Reilly went on a concert performance tour in the US, performing as his character Dewey Cox in the Cox Across America 2007 Tour.[ 106]
In 2011, he recorded songs produced byJack White and released as two singles by White'sThird Man Records . The first single features twoThe Delmore Brothers songs: "Gonna Lay Down My Old Guitar" and "Lonesome Yodel Blues #2", both performed withTom Brosseau . The second single featuresRay Price 's "I'll Be There If You Ever Want" as well as the country classic "I'm Making Plans", performed withBecky Stark .[ 107] He also appeared as "futureMike D " in theBeastie Boys ' video "Make Some Noise ".[ 108] In 2012, his current band, John Reilly & Friends, was slated to perform in theRailroad Revival Tour , alongsideWillie Nelson & Family,Band of Horses andJamey Johnson . On April 21, 2011, Reilly appeared at a New LA Folk Festival event to benefit theJapanese Red Cross Society , in response to the devastatingearthquake . The event featured material from theLouvin Brothers and included performances bySean Watkins , andWimberley Bluegrass Band .[ 111]
In 2014, Reilly appeared on the music video forMr. Oizo 's song "HAM" in which he played Father. Directed byEric Wareheim , "HAM" is an excerpt from the television comedyRubberhead , which displays sketches from various comedians.[ 112] In February 2015, John Reilly & Friends performed onNPR Music 's Tiny Desk Concert series.[ 113] In 2017, Reilly appeared in Lil Dicky's music video for "Pillow Talking". Reilly is known as a versatile stage actor. He has participated in numerousBroadway productions and was nominated for aTony Award for Best Actor in a Play for the 2000 Broadway production ofSam Shepard 'sTrue West . He and co-starPhilip Seymour Hoffman (after starring inHard Eight andBoogie Nights ) were both nominated, alternating between the two lead characters during separate performances.[ 118] [ 119] From October to November 2002, Reilly starred as the title character in the musicalMarty , a musical adaptation of thePaddy Chayefsky -penned filmMarty (1955).[ 120] In 2005, he appeared asStanley Kowalski inEdward Hall 's production of theTennessee Williams playA Streetcar Named Desire .[ 121] Reilly stated in 2010 that he would be very determined to play the lead role of Nathan Detroit if a revival of the musicalGuys and Dolls were to occur.[ 122]
In March 2012, he was featured in a performance ofDustin Lance Black 's play,8 —a staged reenactment of thefederal trial that overturned California'sProp 8 ban onsame-sex marriage —asDavid Blankenhorn .[ 123] The production was held at theWilshire Ebell Theatre and broadcast onYouTube to raise money for theAmerican Foundation for Equal Rights , a non-profit organization funding the plaintiffs' legal team and sponsoring the play.[ 124] [ 125]
In 1992, Reilly married Alison Dickey, an independent film producer. They met on the set ofCasualties of War (1989) inThailand .[ 126] They have two sons, the elder of whom, Leo, is a musician, who performs under the name LoveLeo.[ 127]
