John Boyd Kinnear (1828 – 10 November 1920)[1] was a Scottish lawyer, writer andLiberal, laterLiberal Unionist, politician.
Kinnear was the son of Christian Boyd Greenshields and her husband, Charles Kinnear of Kinloch. He was educated at theUniversity of Edinburgh and theUniversity of St Andrews. He became aScottish Advocate in 1850 and from 1852 to 1856 was political secretary to theLord Advocate of ScotlandJames Moncreiff. In 1855 he was called to the bar at theInner Temple and was aJP forFife.[2] He was an extensive writer on jurisprudence and other topics including religion and women's rights.[3]
In the1885 general election, he was electedMember of Parliament (MP) forEast Fife.[4] However, in1886 he stood as aLiberal Unionist and was defeated by future prime ministerH. H. Asquith.[4][5]
He died at the age of 92.
Kinnear married Sarah Harriet Frith in 1852. She died in 1866 and he married Teresa Bassano of Venice in 1868.
His brother was the eminent architectCharles Kinnear of Peddie & Kinnear.[6]
