John Benjamin Hickey (born June 25, 1963) is an American actor and director with a career in stage, film and television. He won the 2011Tony Award for Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Play for his performance as Felix Turner inThe Normal Heart.

Early life

Hickey was born inPlano, Texas, and graduated fromPlano Sr. High School[1] in 1981. He attendedTexas State University - San Marcos from 1981 to 1983, where he was active in the theater department. He earned hisbachelor's degree inEnglish atFordham University in 1985.[2][3]

Career

OnBroadway, he originated the role of Arthur inTerrence McNally's playLove! Valour! Compassion! in 1995,[4] a role he recreated for the1997 film version.[5]

He played supporting roles in a number of films includingThe Ice Storm (1997)[6] andThe Anniversary Party (2001).[7] He has also appeared inFlightplan,Flags of Our Fathers,Freedom Writers,Then She Found Me,Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen,The Bet[6] andLife with Judy Garland: Me and My Shadows.[8]

He played Clifford Bradshaw in the 1998 Broadway revival ofCabaret, which won the Tony for Best Revival of a Musical.[9] In that same year, he played the lead in the independent filmFinding North.[10]

On Broadway, he played Reverend John Hale in the 2002 revival ofArthur Miller'sThe Crucible.[9]

Hickey played American novelist and playwrightJack Dunphy in the 2006Truman Capote biographical filmInfamous.[11] Hickey played Philip Stoddard on the short-lived gay-themed sitcomIt's All Relative.[12] SinceIt's All Relative, Hickey has appeared onAlias,Law & Order,Brothers & Sisters,Stacked,Heartland,In Plain Sight,Law & Order: Los Angeles, andModern Family.

He appeared in the 2011 Broadway revival ofThe Normal Heart, for which he won theTony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Play.[9] He was in the Broadway revival ofMary Stuart in 2009, as the Earl of Leicester.[13][14]

From 2010 to 2013, he appeared onThe Big C and was nominated for aPrimetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or a Movie for the final season of the series,[15] subtitledHereafter. Hickey starred as scientist Frank Winter on the TV seriesManhattan, which concluded on December 15, 2015, after two seasons and 23 episodes.[16]

In 2015, he appearedOff-Broadway at the Mitzi Newhouse Theatre in the playDada Woof Papa Hot by Peter Parnell.[17]

In 2018, he appeared in the world premiere of Matthew Lopez's playThe Inheritance, inspired by E.M. Forster's novelHowards End, creating the role Henry Wilcox at London's Young Vic and then transferring to theWest End.[18]

On September 30, 2021, Hickey was cast asFather Callahan in the adaptation ofStephen King's'Salem's Lot forWarner Bros. Pictures andNew Line Cinema.[19]

He directed the 2022 Broadway revival of theNeil Simon playPlaza Suite starringSarah Jessica Parker andMatthew Broderick, which had originally been slated to begin previews in March 2020 and was postponed due to theCOVID-19 pandemic.[20][21] The production transferred to the West End and played a limited engagement at theSavoy Theatre from January to April 2024.[22]

Personal life

Hickey is gay. Since 2003 his partner has been screenwriter and television producerJeffrey Richman.[23]
