John Harris Baker (February 28, 1832 – October 21, 1915) was a three-termUnited States representative fromIndiana (1875 to 1881) and aUnited States district judge of theUnited States District Court for the District of Indiana.

Education and career

Born on February 28, 1832, inParma,Monroe County, New York,[1] Baker moved with his parents to what is nowFulton County,Ohio, where he attended and later taught in the common schools.[2] He received anArtium Magister degree in 1879 fromWesleyan University inDelaware, Ohio.[3][1] Heread law inAdrian,Michigan and was admitted to the bar in 1857.[2] He entered private practice inGoshen,Indiana from 1857 to 1875.[1] He unsuccessfully challenged the election of Charles Lefferts Murray to theIndiana Senate in 1863, but his challenge failed and he was never seated, although he was paid as if he had been a state senator.[4]

Congressional service

Baker was elected as aRepublican fromIndiana's 13th congressional district to theUnited States House of Representatives of the44th,45th and46th United States Congresses, serving from March 4, 1875, to March 3, 1881.[2]

After Congress

He declined to be a candidate for renomination in 1880.[2] Baker resumed private practice in Goshen from 1881 to 1892.[1] He was a delegate to the1888 Republican National Convention.[2]

Federal judicial service

Baker was nominated by PresidentBenjamin Harrison on March 24, 1892, to a seat on theUnited States District Court for the District of Indiana vacated by JudgeWilliam Allen Woods.[1] He was confirmed by theUnited States Senate on March 29, 1892, and received his commission the same day.[1] His service terminated on December 8, 1902, due to his retirement.[1]

Retirement and death

Following his retirement, Baker resided in Goshen.[2] He died on October 21, 1915, in Goshen.[1] He is interred in Oakridge Cemetery in Goshen.[2]

Family

Baker was the brother ofLucien Baker, aUnited States senator fromKansas.[2] He was the father of JudgeFrancis E. Baker.
