Johannes Teutonicus Zemeke (died 1245), alsoJoannes Simeca Teutonicus andJohn Zimeke, was aDecretist glossator, best known for his glosses on Gratian'sDecretum in collaboration withBartholomew of Brescia.[1]
Johannes studied the two laws at theUniversity of Bologna (under the guidance ofAzo in civil law) and spokeGerman,Italian,French andLatin. His works comprise thegloss on Gratian'sDecretum and that on the constitutions of theFourth Lateran Council. Successivelycanon, provost of the chapter ofHalberstadt, provincial of theDominicans forHungary, then forLombardy (while the province was leagued againstFrederick II), and general of the Dominicans, he was a close friend of the emperor of Germany. He was obliged to part from him, which explains his political contradictions: no Empire outside the Church, but an imperial power coming from God.
