Joseph George Alt (born February 28, 2003) is an American professionalfootballoffensive tackle for theLos Angeles Chargers of theNational Football League (NFL). He playedcollege football for theNotre Dame Fighting Irish, twice earningAll-American honors before being selected fifth overall by the Chargers in the2024 NFL draft. He is the son of formerKansas City Chiefs playerJohn Alt and younger brother of ice hockey playerMark Alt.

Early life

Alt was born on February 28, 2003, inNorth Oaks, Minnesota.[1] He attended theTotino-Grace High School inFridley, Minnesota. He played inside linebacker, offensive tackle, andtight end.[2] He committed to theUniversity of Notre Dame to play college football.[3][4]

College career

As a true freshman at Notre Dame in 2021, Alt played offensive tackle and tight end. He played in all 13 games and started the final 13 games at left tackle.[5][6] In 2023, he was a finalist for theOutland Trophy, which is awarded to the nation's best OL/Interior DL.[7] He was unanimously named to the2023 College Football All-America Team and declared for the2024 NFL draft following the season.[8][9]

Alt was selected by theLos Angeles Chargers fifth overall in the2024 NFL draft.[12] On June 10, 2024, Alt signed his four-year rookie contract with the Chargers worth $33.2 million guaranteed that included a signing bonus of $20.9 million.[13] As a rookie, he started 16 games, only missing Week 4.[14]

Personal life

His father,John Alt, played in the NFL for theKansas City Chiefs.[15] His older brother,Mark, is a professional ice hockey player.[2] As adefenseman, Mark played 20 games in theNational Hockey League.[16]
