Joan of France (May 1351 – 16 September 1371), also known asBlanche, was the only child ofPhilip VI of France and his second wifeBlanche of Navarre. Joan was born nine months after her father's death.
Joan's maternal grandparents werePhilip III of Navarre andJoan II of Navarre. Her paternal grandparents wereCharles of Valois andMargaret of Naples.
Joan had two half-brothers from her father's first marriage toJoan the Lame:John II of France andPhilip of Valois, Duke of Orléans. After the death of Philip, Blanche retired toNeaufles-Saint-Martin nearGisors inNormandy.
In 1370, Joan was betrothed toInfante John, Duke of Girona, son and heir ofPeter IV of Aragon. The marriage contract was signed 16 July 1370. The following year Joan departed fromFrance and set off to marry John inAragon. However, Joan died on 16 September 1371 inBéziers,[1] whilst travelling to meet her future husband.[2] He accused the midwifeBonanada of having caused her death by use of sorcery.[3]
Joan's mother died 5 October 1398, twenty-seven years after her daughter. They are buried together in theBasilica of St Denis,[4] the necropolis of the Kings of France, north ofParis.
