João Diogo Serpa Meira (born 30 April 1987) is aPortuguese former professionalfootballer who played as acentral defender.

Club career

Born inLisbon and raised inAlmada,[2] Meira spent until the age of 24 competing in thethird andfourth divisions. In the2010–11 season, he started in all of his 33 league appearances asAtlético Clube de Portugal returned to theSegunda Liga following a lengthy absence.[2]

Meira made his professional debut on 31 July 2011, in a 0–1 home loss againstS.C. Freamunde in thefirst round of theTaça da Liga.[3] On 2 February 2012, he was suspended for eight months after failing adrug test on 29 May of the previous year, in a match againstPadroense FC.[4]

For2012–13, Meira joinedC.F. Os Belenenses also in the second tier, signing a three-year contract.[5] He contributed 34 games and two goals,[6][7] as theLisbon side returned to thePrimeira Liga after three years, as champions with 21 points more than the closest team in the table.[8][9]

From2013 to2015, Meira started in 43 of his 45 league appearances, and Belenenses alsoqualified for theUEFA Europa League in the latter season.[10][11] On 23 January 2016, aged 28, he moved abroad for the first time in his career, signing withChicago Fire FC ofMajor League Soccer as afree agent.[12] He made his debut on 6 March, asthe campaign opened with a 3–4 home defeat toNew York City FC.[13]

After a solid performance during a 3–0 win overPhiladelphia Union atToyota Park on 4 September 2016, Meira earned a spot on the Team of the Week.[14] In November 2017, he announced he would not continue thefollowing season.[15]

Meira joined SpanishSegunda División clubLorca FC on 11 January 2018.[16][17] Eleven days later, however, after the latter failed to meet the terms of the contract, he left.[18]

On 23 March 2018, Meira signed a one-year deal withVålerenga Fotball from the NorwegianEliteserien.[19] In late January 2019, he moved to the RomanianLiga I withCS Concordia Chiajna.[20]

Meira retired in October 2023 aged 36, following one-season spells withVitória de Setúbal (top division),[21]C.D. Cova da Piedade[22] andLeixões SC (second). Immediately afterwards, he was named his last club'ssporting director.[23]
