Edward Charles James Gardner (24 August 1924 – 3 May 2010) was an English actor.[1]

Early life

Gardner was born inNewmarket,Suffolk, England, on 24 August 1924.[2]

DuringWorld War II, Gardner served in theRoyal Air Force as an air gunner withNo. 10 Squadron. He completed 30sorties as aHalifax rear gunner and was awarded theDistinguished Flying Medal.[1]

Career

After the war, Gardner studied at theCentral School of Speech and Drama, working in Rep after graduation, later working for theRoyal Shakespeare Company for a decade. His first film appearance was inThe Curse of the Mummy's Tomb released during 1964.[3][4] Thereafter he appeared in over 30 films and also made extensive TV and theatre appearances. Some of his best known Shakespearean roles such as Adam inAs You Like It, and Gravedigger inHamlet were performed under the direction ofTerry Hands.[5]

Gardner playedKnight Bus driver Ernie Prang inHarry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, the third film in theHarry Potter film series.[6][7]

Death

Gardner died in London, on 3 May 2010, at the age of 85.[8]
