American film director, animator and screenwriter
Jim Capobianco (born 1969) is an American film director, animator and screenwriter.[ 2] [ 3] [ 4] [ 5] [ 6] He has worked as astory artist andstoryboard artist [ 7] for films such asThe Lion King (1994),Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996),A Bug's Life (1998),Toy Story 2 (1999),Monsters, Inc. (2001),Finding Nemo (2003),Up (2009),Inside Out (2015), andFinding Dory (2016).
In 2008, he was nominated for anAcademy Award for Best Original Screenplay forRatatouille (2007). In 2023, he wrote and directed the animated feature filmThe Inventor , aboutLeonardo da Vinci 's life in France.[ 8]
Raised inSaddle Brook, New Jersey , Capobianco attendedSaddle Brook High School .[ 9]
A graduate of theCalifornia Institute of the Arts ,[ 10] Capobianco started in the story department atWalt Disney Feature Animation onThe Lion King (1994).[ 10] [ 3] He then worked on thestoryboards forHunchback of Notre Dame (1999) andFantasia 2000 (1999).[ 1] Capobianco has also worked forPixar ,[ 11] on storyboards for films such asA Bug's Life (1998),Toy Story 2 (1999),Monsters, Inc. (2001),Finding Nemo (2003),Up (2009),Inside Out (2015), andFinding Dory (2016).[ 12] [ 13]
In 2007, he wrote and directed the animated short filmYour Friend the Rat ,[ 12] and co-wrote the screenplay for the feature filmRatatouille ,[ 12] which earned him a nomination for theAcademy Award for Best Original Screenplay .[ 14]
In 2009, Capobianco co-founded with Shelley Trott the Bay Area International Children's Film Festival.[ 6] That same year, he directedLeonardo , a short film aboutLeonardo da Vinci ,[ 15] now in the permanent collection of theMoMA NYC .[ 10]
With Aerial Contrivance Workshop, Capobianco was the 2D animation sequence director for Walt Disney Motion Pictures'Mary Poppins Returns (2018),[ 10] and also wrote and directed the 2023 stop-motion animated feature filmThe Inventor ,[ 16] [ 17] a continuation of his shortLeonardo , focused on the end of Leonardo da Vinci's life in France.[ 18] [ 19]
