James Harmon Stack, (born January 21, 1992) known professionally asJim-E Stack, is an American musician, songwriter, record producer, and DJ born in San Francisco, CA,[1] and based in Los Angeles, CA.[2] His solo releases have featuredBon Iver,Empress Of,Charli XCX,Lucky Daye,Ant Clemons, Jana Hunter ofLower Dens, andthe Range.[3] As a songwriter and record producer, Stack has collaborated withDominic Fike,[4]Kacy Hill,[5]Octavian,[6] Bon Iver,[7]Joji,Caroline Polachek,[8]Haim,[9]Diplo,[10]Empress Of,[11]Lorde,[12] and more. He has remixedWet,Anna of the North,Rostam,Active Child, andLower Dens, as well as other artists.[3][13]

Career

2011-2016: Early years,Tell Me I Belong

Born James Harmon Stack, Jim-E Stack grew up in San Francisco's Inner Richmond,[1] where his passion for music evolved from playing in garage rock bands and jazz bands to making beats inspired byDaft Punk,Burial,J Dilla,Timbaland, andThe Neptunes.[14] While Stack lived in New Orleans and Brooklyn, his original releases and EPs, in addition to remixes forSky Ferreira andASAP Rocky,[13] garnered critical acclaim and interest. It would lead to his debut 2014 album,Tell Me I Belong,[15] accompanied by touring withShlohmo andBonobo.[13]

2016–present: Collaborations,EPHEMERA

Returning to California in 2016, Stack continued to release new solo material,[3] including collaborations with fellow electronic artistThe Range,[16] as well as solo releases featuringNoonie Bao,Rostam,Charli XCX, and more.[3] Between then and early 2019, he collaborated withEmpress Of,Diplo, andCaroline Polachek for their own music, in addition to contributing on songs forHaim.

Stack contributed heavily to his then-partnerKacy Hill's second studio albumIs It Selfish If We Talk About Me Again, released July 2020.[17] Hill states Stack acted as inspiration for much of the album's lyrical content in the liner notes of the record.[18]

From late 2019 through 2020, Stack released new singles featuringAnt Clemons,[19]Empress Of,[11] Dijon andBon Iver,[20] along with an announcement for a new album titledEPHEMERA. It features the aforementioned singles, with other collaborations withOctavian, Bearface ofBrockhampton and Kacy Hill.[21] Stack also released a CD exclusive EP in October 2021, which was available for free only at one store in New York and London.[22]

Stack was again a primary collaborator in the creation of Kacy Hill'sSimple, Sweet, and Smiling album, which released in October 2021.[23] In 2023, Stack served as a principal producer, songwriter, and instrumentalist withDominic Fike, collaborating on his albumSunburn.

Stack worked again with Bon Iver as a primary collaborator on theirSABLE EP, which was released in October 2024, and the subsequent albumSABLE, fABLE, which was released in April 2025. Stack was a principal collaborator, producer, and composer onLorde's fourth studio album,Virgin, released June 2025, with Stack being credited on the album's entire track list.[24]
