Jiang Zhenbang (simplified Chinese:蒋振邦;traditional Chinese:蔣振邦;pinyin:Jiǎng Zhènbāng; born 28 May 2001) is a Chinesebadminton player.[1] PartneringWei Yaxin, he has won medals at the World Championships and Asian Championships, and the pair attained the world No. 1 ranking for the first time on 18 March 2025. Jiang was also part of the Chinese national team that claimed theSudirman Cup in 2025.

Early life and background

Jiang was born on 28 May 2001 inGuilin, Guangxi, China.[2] As a child, he showed an interest in various sports, particularlyfootball, influenced by his father, Jiang Neng, a former player for the local police football team.[2] In 2007, he joined a local badminton club under coaches Liu Zhongxing and Hu Ning.[2] After witnessingLin Dan’s victory at the2008 Beijing Olympics, Jiang's father encouraged him to focus solely on badminton, to which he agreed.[2] Jiang's mother, Peng Juan, even left her job to support his training.[2]

In 2009, while participating in a national junior badminton tournament in Guilin, Jiang’s performance caught the attention of Cheng Yan, the head coach of the Shanghai Children's Sports School badminton team.[2] Later that year, at nine years old, Jiang moved toShanghai and joined the Huangpu badminton team under coach Yang Ting.[2][3] Supported by local sports authorities, he enrolled at Ruijin Erlu Primary School and lived in an athlete dormitory.[2][3] At 11, he was selected for the Shanghai Sports School’s intensive training program.[3] In 2014, he joined the Shanghai badminton team.[2]

Career

2018–2021: Junior career

In 2018, Jiang earned a place on China’s national second team[2][3] and began competing in junior international tournaments in both boys' and mixed doubles. The following year, he achieved several solid results, including bronze medals in the mixed doubles event at theAsian[4] and theWorld Junior Championships.[5] In 2021, he advanced to thefirst team, becoming the first male player from Guilin to do so, and specialized in mixed doubles.[2][3]

2022

In October, Jiang returned to international competition afterthe pandemic, forming a new partnership withWei Yaxin. At their first tournament together, theIndonesia International inMalang, they finished as runners-up toDejan Ferdinansyah andGloria Emanuelle Widjaja.[2][6] A week later, the pair secured their maiden title at theIndonesia Masters Super 100, defeating compatriotsCheng Xing andChen Fanghui in straight games.[2][7] They continued their momentum in November by winning theVietnam International[2][8] and concluded the season with a runner-up finish at theMalaysia International.[8][9]

2023

2023 was a breakthrough year for Jiang and Wei. They started the season by reaching the final of theIndonesia Masters as qualifiers, where they placed second to teammatesFeng Yanzhe andHuang Dongping.[10] Jiang was also part of China's team that won the2023 Asia Mixed Team Championships.[11]

Following this, he and Wei won theRuichang China Masters[8][12] and then earned their firstBWF World Tour title at theSwiss Open, edging MalaysiansGoh Soon Huat andShevon Jemie Lai 21–17, 19–21, 21–17 in the final.[8][13] They also captured the2023 Asian Championships crown after overcoming seniorsZheng Siwei andHuang Yaqiong in two straight games.[14]

In the second half of the year, the pair were runners-up at theKorea Open[15] and went on to take a bronze medal on theirWorld Championships debut, where they fell to Zheng Siwei and Huang Yaqiong in the semi-finals.[16] They also fell short in the final ofArctic Open.[17]

The duo then secured their first Super 750 title at theFrench Open by beating veteransTang Chun Man andTse Ying Suet in three games[18] and added another runner-up finish at theKorea Masters.[19] At theBWF Awards in December, Jiang and Wei were named Most Improved Player of the Year, in recognition of their rapid rise in the world rankings.[20]

2024

Jiang and Wei began the year by reaching the semi-finals of theMalaysia Open,[21] before placing second at theIndia Open to former world championsDechapol Puavaranukroh andSapsiree Taerattanachai.[22] A few months later, they were stopped in the last four of the2024 Asian Championships and settled for bronze.[23]

The pair then produced a string of strong results, triumphing against Zheng Siwei and Huang Yaqiong 21–11, 21–14 to claim their first Super 1000 crown at theIndonesia Open,[24] followed by another title at theAustralian Open the next week.[25] They also won theJapan Open in August[26] and captured their fourth title in five tournaments played at theHong Kong Open.[27]

In the following months, he and Wei finished as runners-up in consecutive finals at theArctic Open[28] andDenmark Open,[29] both to Feng Yanzhe and Huang Dongping. The duo also made their debut at theWorld Tour Finals, where they reached the semi-finals before falling to Olympic and eventual champions Zheng Siwei and Huang Yaqiong.[30]

2025

At theIndia Open, Jiang and Wei claimed the title, improving on their runner-up finish from the previous season.[31] He also began a short partnership with Huang Dongping at theAll England Open, where they reached the semi-finals,[32] but the pair did not achieve notable results afterwards. On 18 March, he and Wei rose to world number 1 for the first time.[33]

Back with his regular partner, Jiang secured a second consecutive bronze medal at the2025 Asian Championships[34] and earned his firstSudirman Cup medal after contributing to China's triumph at the2025 Sudirman Cup.[35] He and Wei also placed second at theMalaysia Masters.[36]

In July, the pair defended theirJapan Open crown, defeating Dechapol Puavaranukroh andSupissara Paewsampran for their first title together since January,[37] before finishing as runners-up at theChina Open the following week.[38] Seeded second at the2025 World Championships, they advanced to the final but lost 15–21, 14–21 toChen Tang Jie andToh Ee Wei, settling for silver.[39]

Later in the season, Jiang and Wei reached theKorea Open final before finishing second.[40] They went on to win theArctic Open in October,[41] followed by another final appearance at theDenmark Open the following week.[42] At the year-endWorld Tour Finals, they finished as runners-up to Feng Yanzhe and Huang Dongping,[43] bringing their head-to-head record against Feng and Huang to 3–14.[44]

The BWF World Tour, which was announced on 19 March 2017 and implemented in 2018,[45] is a series of elite badminton tournaments sanctioned by theBadminton World Federation (BWF). The BWF World Tour is divided into levels of World Tour Finals, Super 1000, Super 750, Super 500, Super 300, and the BWF Tour Super 100.[46]
