Jewel Ponferada (born July 8, 1988) is a Filipino professionalbasketball player for theBlackwater Bossing of thePhilippine Basketball Association (PBA). He was selected 13th overall in the2012 PBA draft by theSan Mig Coffee Mixers.[1]

College career

Ponferada played for theNU Bulldogs. He mostly played center during his stay there, but also played power forward.[2] In 2010, he made a game-winning triple with 2.9 seconds left to prevent theAdamson Falcons from immediately claiming a spot in the Final Four.[3]

Professional career

San Mig Coffee Mixers (2012–2013)

Ponferada was drafted by the Mixers along with big menAldrech Ramos andGian Chiu.[4] He was able to win a championship during his time there in the2013 Governors' Cup.[5] Before the following conference, he was traded to Globalport.[6]

Globalport Batang Pier (2013–2015)

The Globalport Batang Pier acquired Ponferada with a 2017 second round pick.[6]

Rain or Shine Elasto Painters (2015–2023)

On August 16, 2015, Ponferada and a 2015 second round pick (who later turned out to beSimon Enciso) was traded by the Batang Pier to theRain or Shine Elasto Painters in exchange forJervy Cruz.[7] In the2015–16 Philippine Cup, Ponferada registered career-highs of 18 points and 13 rebounds.[8] In theCommissioner's Cup, he won a championship with Rain or Shine.[9] During theGovernor's Cup, he was suspended for one game for committing two flagrant fouls against theMahindra Enforcers.[10]

In the2016–17 Philippine Cup, he posted a new career-high of 22 points, while also grabbing 9 rebounds.[11] The followingPhilippine Cup, he made five of his seven attempts from three-point range to finish with 17 points, 3 rebounds, and a block in a win against theSan Miguel Beermen.[12]

Before the2021 Philippine Cup, Ponferada's contract was extended.[13] He scored 17 points to lead the team in a loss to theNorthport Batang Pier.[14]

On May 19, 2022, Ponferada signed a two-year extension with the team.[15] He had a season-high 20 points in a loss to the Beermen.[16]

TNT Tropang Giga (2023–2024)

On September 21, 2023, Ponferada, along withHenry Galinato, was traded to theTNT Tropang Giga forDave Marcelo and a 2024 first-round pick.[17]

Blackwater Bossing (2024–present)

On July 2, 2024, Ponferrada andKib Montalbo was traded toBlackwater Bossing forRey Nambatac.[18]
