Jesús Garay Vecino (10 September 1930 – 10 February 1995) was a Spanishfootballer who played as acentral defender.

He amassedLa Liga totals of 341 games and ten goals over 16 seasons, representing mainly in the competitionAthletic Bilbao (ten years) andBarcelona (five).

Garay appeared forSpain at the1962 World Cup.

Club career

Born inBilbao,Biscay, Garay joined localAthletic Bilbao in 1950 from neighbouringSD Erandio Club. He was immediately cast into the team's starting XI, making hisLa Liga debut on 8 October 1950 in a 9–4 home win overRC Celta de Vigo[1] and scoring his first goal in the competition on 17 December of the same year also at theSan Mamés Stadium, againstFC Barcelona (4–3 victory).[2]

In summer 1960, after 292 official appearances for Athletic and five major titles won, including the1955–56 national championship and threeCopa del Generalísimo trophies,one of them conquered againstReal Madrid at theSantiago Bernabéu Stadium, Garay signed for Barcelona for 5,5 millionpesetas, a fee that would later be used to build theMercy stand at San Mamés, dubbed by club fansJesús Garay.[3] He retired at the age of 35 after a further five seasons in the top division, four with theCatalans andone withCD Málaga, suffering relegation with the latter.

Garay died on 10 February 1995 at 64, in his hometown.[4]

International career

Garay earned 29caps for theSpanish national team for eight and a half years, making his debut on 19 March 1953 in a 3–1friendly win againstBelgium in Barcelona. He was part of the squad that competed at the1962 FIFA World Cup, featuring in the 0–1 group stage loss toCzechoslovakia.[5]
